Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource--Not for Beginners Review: I found this book to be an excellent source of information on how to set up ASP pages to do some *real* tasks. It really is wonderful and provides an excellent level of detail to the reader on a variety of relevant subjects.HOWEVER, please do not consider this book for one who is a new programmer. I have been programming for a number of years, and found many of the concepts discussed in the book required several readings for full understanding. Contrary to the "beginner" rating on the cover, I believe this book requires the reader to have some proficiency in a language such as Visual Basic.
Rating: Summary: This will get you up and running with ASP in no time. Review: I had been using the Wrox Beginning ASP 2.0 book because it was one of the few beginners ASP books out there. I quickly became dissappointed with its rambling disorganized style and examples that sometimes had nothing to do with the text. This book delivers what you need to know concisely and to the point. It is very organized and has simple, easy to follow examples. With the knowledge from this book I re-wrote some of the code in a web-app that I recently wrote, making it far more readable and concise. Highly recommeded!
Rating: Summary: Know your HTML but not Programming? This is for you. Review: I have several programmer Friends who think nothing of writing scripts in Perl and Code in C/C++. I never quite caught on though I had tackled HMTL and Graphics. I looked here @ amazon.com and found what I thought was a Good Book. It is Very Informative, and easy to use. I am actually understanding what I am doing. While it will take you longer than 24 hours it didn't take me more than 10 days
Rating: Summary: What everyone else said. EXCELLENT BOOK!!! Review: I have to agree with everyone here. This is one book on ASP that's WORTHY of being dog-eared to death! With no knowledge of ASP, I was able to get a web application using database access, web-to-email forms, admin user logins, etc in about 3 days!!! Unbelieveable! I never progressed that much with these other books (especially that OTHER SAMS book that says you can learn this stuff in 21 days). I know my previous experience with Visual Basic helped a lot (considered I haven't worked with VB since 1993) in getting me up to speed. But hey! This book was to the point, consise, had code I could use IMMEDIATELY (and did), there's nothing more I can say about it. This book effectively got me out of the commodity "Web Page Design" arena and into the more lucrative and demanding "Web Developer" arena. Thanks, Wille and Koller!
Rating: Summary: bkiller Review: I have to say that I tend to shy away from "in 24 hour" type books because they don't give enough detail to be worth while after you get past the basics. However, I have been doing ASP and related programming for about 1 year and use this as a reference as much as my WROX Professional ASP book. As promised it is very easy to read and give examples or ideas that I use on commercial apps that are missing from the Professional ASP book. I reccommend this book to anyone starting ASP. I suspect even experienced programmers will keep it on the book shelf for some time as it will be useful.
Rating: Summary: Better than Dummies Review: I read this book after reading the ASP for Dummies book - wow, what a difference. This one was much clearer, and made more sense. I found the examples to be very good, even though I can now write ASPs that do the same thing in less space. Showing the long way around is often a great learning tool so that you understand everything - I guess it worked.
Rating: Summary: You should buy this book IF. . . Review: I recently purchased this book to learn how to make my webpages interact with a live database. This book does that and more. After reading other people's reviews I need to qualify my "it's incredible" rating. I am a PC fanatic who has never used VBscript. However, I did do a bit of basic programming in high school. If "for . . .next" is not a foreign statement to you, then you will greatly benefit from this book. Because the examples given are very practical, they can easily be modified to fit your needs. Change a date here, a statement there and you will have the custom page you envisioned. Personally, I am simply amazed at what I learned in less than a day. If you are not a programmer but are not intimidated by a few lines of code, this is the book for you. If you're stumped but you hate buying computer books because you usually like to figure it out yourself, this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Much better than I thought Review: I thought this would be too basic - but, Wow! it's great. Easy to understand the concepts and put them into practice right away. One of the best books I've gotten this year!
Rating: Summary: Not a great book for beginners Review: I was able to follow only upto first 5 hours and later the examples were way to complicated and even after several readings I wasn't able to fully understand the code and the analysis for the code given is not sufficent. Not a book for beginners..
Rating: Summary: You will spend a lot of time debugging the authors examples Review: I would normally expect a book with the title "...in 24 hours" to be an introduction to a subject and would expect clear simple examples. You won't get that here. Most of the book is about how to use VBScript to write ASP code. Unfortunalety there is an error in the authors code for about every 5 lines. So if you plan to learn VBScript be prepared to use 48 hours for debugging the authors examples in addition to the 24 hours. If you know VBScript...well then I guess there is not much to learn from the book.
