Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: OK but incomplete Review: Most notably, nothing on Solaris installation. I got in the habit of writing my own notes in the blank pages (it is a handy size, anyway) and keeping it in my bag. This book would have been more useful with more practical information in a smaller font, to keep the size of the book down.

If the next edition is cleaner, and includes Solaris 7, I would highly recommend it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great reference - well done Review: Solaris Essential Reference is by far the best Solaris manual I now own. I like it because even though we recently upgraded to Solaris 7 on all of our machines here, everything in the book is still valid and works. I highly recommend this book to others. Especially if you are in charge of administration of Solaris systems... its invaluable. Clear, simple, concise. Perfect.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good, but a only little more than man pages. Review: The book is a good reference to have on your desktop, but the information it gives is only a little more that that from the man pages. There are also a few unresolved references ("see page xxx", without replacing the xxx) and lack of Solaris version where the command is available. It can also be improved with information about the extra packages necessary to use some of the commands (like de ASET, for example)

Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good command summary; missing major parts and needs examples Review: This book is a good summary of frequently-used Solaris commands. It also includes information about OBP, LDAP, routing, Kerberos, performance tuning, NFS, DHCP.
However, its missing major parts--ifconfig isn't mentioned. NIS, IPSec, and network security is either not covered or inadequate. I like the book's small size, but I wish they would reduce the white space and font and fill in the missing pieces.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great reference with great examples Review: This book is packed with very useful Solaris information. But what I like best are the examples that are given with the topics. They are shown in an easy to follow format. I am the type of person that learns by seeing examples, and this book is exactly what I was looking for. The other thing that I like about this book is that the all of the information applies to all versions of Solaris in the 2.x series. We also have some Solaris 7 machines where I work, and the information is just as relavent. I highly recommend this book to others who use Solaris -- both new users and experienced professionals. It is far better than the other Solaris books that I have seen.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Very handy reference Review: This is a very good reference book, covering just about every topic that could come up. I especially liked the sections covering all the security commands and methods. There are lots of nice extra touches in the book as well, such as a handy list of tcp/udp ports in the appendix.

Review: Through the SolarisGuide.com website John has assisted others in understanding the Solaris Operating Environment for years. It is only now that he has written this incredible book so everyone can take his knowledge and put it to good use. I would recommend that every Solaris Administrator get a copy of this book and keep it near your terminal.
