Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: As you all know, Linux is gradually making a big statement in this new year. This book will get you started for the future, because the future is Linux.
Rating: Summary: This book is great! Review: I had heard a lot about Linux and wanted to try it for myself. This book answered all my questions. It showed me how to install Red Hat Linux (it even comes with it on CD-ROM!) and how to get started. This is a great book for anyone who wants to run Linux!
Rating: Summary: New to Linux? Buy this now! Review: I have been into Linux for about 5 months now and this was the third book I bought on the subject, I only wish it would have been the first one. True advise from a "used to be newbie", buy this book!
Rating: Summary: The one book that really got me up and running in Linux Review: I tried several other books, but only Harold Davis' bookactually gave me all the info I needed to get Linux running. Yes, youcan install Linux right from the CD in the book, by following Harold'sclear and detailed instructions. And don't let the small size of the book or the plentiful illustrations fool you - this book covers a wide range of Linux commands and tools, even setting up a Web server. The best Linux book I've read.
Rating: Summary: Great Introduction to Linux Review: I wish this was the first book I bought. There are some real Linux lemons out there, but this book isn't one of them. It does an awesome job of taking you through most of the questions you would have as a new Red Hat Linux user.
Rating: Summary: Up and running fast with Linux! Review: If you want to get up and running fast with Linux, this book is for you. It doesn't have the jokes of a Dummies book - what it does have are detailed step-by-step task-based guides and LOTS of pictures. The book emphasizes Red Hat Linux 6 and the graphic user interface of the Gnome desktop (it looks alot like Windows (tm)). But there are also chapters covering Linux at the command line, and even shell scripting! Try it, you'll like it.
Rating: Summary: Red Hat Linux 6 is as good as it gets! Review: Red Hat Linux 6 is a superb operating system choice for almost any application. Obviously, the price is right (you can get it in many ways, including the CD-ROM that accompanies my book). This book is for you if you are simply curious about Linux and how it compares to Windows. If you are installing Linux for the first time, "Red Hat Linux 6: Visual QuickPro Guide" will help you get up and running quickly. I'll take you through working with the Gnome desktop (the Redmond95 theme makes it look alot like Windows!). You'll learn how to use programs such as Netscape and Corel WordPerfect on the Linux platform. If you are a more advanced user, this book will teach you how to work with the SQL database that ships with RH6. You'll find information on working with the BASH shell, and get quickly running with a Linux network, the Apache web server, and much more. Why not get started now? Welcome to the amazing world of open source software and Linux!
Rating: Summary: Out of Date Review: The CD-ROM that comes with this computer contains an old version of Red Hat Linux, version 6.0, as opposed to the latest version 6.2. It didn't have the drivers for my newer computer, so I purchased the 6.2 box, and this really is significantly better. Since the book just covers 6.0, I've found the Red Hat documentation to be more useful than it. Even if this book were up to date, it is still poorly organized and incomplete. I just purchased the book Special Edition Using Red Hat Linux, and while it is lengthy, it covers 6.2 (with CD-ROM) and seems quite straightforward.

Rating: Summary: Great Introduction to Linux Review: This book got me up and going in minutes. It goes into good detail about the Gnome interface, which is probably the most user friendly GUI for the Linux beginner. Plus just having the RH Linux 6.0 cd accompany it is enough to make you get this book. Advanced users may not find this book has enough detailed information.
