Rating: Summary: Good resource for beginners and professionals... Review: I'm a professional perl programmer and picked this book up after a recommendation from a friend. It's a great resource for beginners and professionals alike. I constantly find myself looking up certain syntax and how-to's in this book. Great to add to your personal library.
Rating: Summary: Great Intro to CGI Review: I'm a recent returnee to the world of programming, having just started to learn Perl and PHP. Although the O'Reily "Learning Perl" and "Programming Perl" are great, this book really got me up and running with CGI, which in my humble opinion are not covered that well by "Learning" or "Programming". The examples are to the point, aimed at teaching immediate functionality which is exactly what I was looking for. At only 224 pages, it might seem slight compared to the trend of mega-page programming books, but it packs a lot in its short length and is not "padded" with "Function References" which so many books pass off as "original content." (FYI -> 4 stars is as high as I rate, thus preserving 5 for the truely exeptional book. Doesn't it bug you when everybody just rates books as 1 xor 5 as if it were binary?)
Rating: Summary: Perfect for beginners Review: I've gone through three or four other Perl books looking for one that would help me actually write the Perl scripts I want for my site. This book is perfect. It presents the concepts simply, but completely. I'm an experienced coder, but not in Perl and too many books either didn't answer my questions or bogged down in unimportant details. I have every confidence that I'll finally be able to write the web apps I've been dreaming of. As a bonus, the companion web site is very helpful (I've actually been waiting for this book ever since I saw the web site).
Rating: Summary: Great for Semi-Newbies Review: I've learned my first perl just by looking at the source code. This book explained and taught me very well. I learned (and made) tons of news things. Although, maybe they could of explained some parts more, this book is great.
Rating: Summary: Best Perl book on the market Review: I've tried many Perl books, but this one is by far the only one worth having. I started out as a novice and as my experience with perl grows, I contiuously find the help I need in this compact little book. Concepts are explained clearly and concisely and the examples very easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: Best Buy Review: If you are begining Perl, this book is straight foreward, simple and you will be scripting in no time! I strongely recomend this book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Starting Point! Review: If you are looking to learn Perl/CGI programming from the ground up, this is an excellent intro to the world of Internet programming with Perl. The book, however, is UNIX-oriented; small chapter on Windows vs. UNIX would be a plus.
Rating: Summary: Only for well seasoned UNIX users Review: If you are not a UNIX user and are a complete begginer then forget this book. Before one starts coding perl you need a compiler or interpreter of some sort ,Now this is mentioned in the book in refernce to UNIX users. There is absolutly no guidance of any kind whatsoever to windows users. Furthermore the examples are only theroritical and no actual example of how those theories are implemented is given. e.g Arrays are explained (codewise) What arrays are used for isnt. All in all it isnt a bad book ,but I feel obliged to give it only one star since it completly ignores the holygrail of coding and scripting. COMPLIERS&INTERPRTERS.
Rating: Summary: The Only CGI Book You Need! Review: If you need to learn CGI quickly and easily but are not sure which book to get...buy this one...you will not regret it at all. The book is very comprehensive and puts even the most complex of things in simple and easy to understand terms. Not many books reside on my desk...but this one is always there!
Rating: Summary: Good way to get started Review: If you're new to Perl and CGI programming, this is a good way to get off the ground quickly. However, after reading this you'll want to get another intro book on Perl that teaches the basics in greater depth.
