Summary: Sooner or Later You'll need this book
Review: When the database is running too slowly, you really have two options, throw more iron at the problem, or make it work a bit smarter. Throwing more CPU's, more memory at the problem may be the easiest answer, after all it's the company's money. But it isn't likely to help for very long. The problems in the database will not go away by themselves. The growth of the database, the number of users or whatever will soon catch up with you. Or, for a whole lot less money, you can buy this book.

This book is basically on the performance features that have been incorporated into Oracle 10g that can help identify the problem areas. Using these features, the database will tell you where it's spending its time. This is not a book that will tell you how to optimize a SQL statement. But if you know that Oracle is spending more of its time on this statement, then you at least know where to start looking -- maybe it's something in the statement, perhaps changing the index will help (it often will) but at least you know where to start looking.

There's a simple conclusion to reviewing this book. If you're going to be responsible for running a big Oracle system, buy it.
