Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent Reference for a Complex Software Review: I provide advanced Word support for a company of over 1,000 people, and this book is an invaluable resource for me. I recommend this book to anyone needing to learn more than just surface knowledge on Word.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The most complete Word 97 reference available Review: I selected this 1028 page black and blue behemoth off the shelf due to the quantity of in-formation it provided. Not only does the Special Edition come with more details about macros and Visual Basic, but it also came with an electronic version of the book in CD format. That does not mean that the book is not well laid out or is not easy to read, for it is both of these important things.By comparison, I have a few of the Microsoft Press Quick Course books for learning new applications. I find them simple to read and easy to use, enjoyable tools that can get a new user one up and running fast. However, Microsoft's Running Word 97 was a disap-pointment to me as an advanced reference. It was as light and lively as their Quick Course books. But, it did not go into advance depth on many subjects - indeed, it seemed as if the text was merely lifted from the Help screens of Word itself. Running did not delve into macros and barely mentioned Visual Basic. The Sybex competition was not much better. While it did not have the wide-open white spaces trimmed in blue like the Microsoft books, it too did not delve into advance topics. The hefty Que book bills itself as the "most complete Word 97 reference available." In-deed it is.
Rating: ![0 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-0-0.gif) Summary: A relentless focus on making you more productive w/ Word Review: I truly appreciate your considering my book on Word 97. My book has only one goal: to make you the most productive Word user on the block. What's the fastest, easiest way to get the job done? How can you streamline and automate all those annoying tasks you've been doing by hand? How can you do more with Word than you ever thought possible? That's what you'll find here. For example, I've included real-world case studies on using styles and templates to organize all the documents you (and your organization) create. I tell you how Microsoft suggests you handle chapter numbering in your documents - and some far easier solutions that'll do the job 98% of the time. You'll learn how you can search/replace just about anything - pictures, styles the contents of your clipboard - and how that can save you tons of time. Ditto for AutoText - a spectacular timesaver. Lots of Word users know about AutoText, but few take full advantage of it. I'll show you how. There's detailed coverage of using Word 97 as a Web editor - plus all those "traditional" ways to communicate with lots of people, like mail merge, fax and E-mail. If you build large, complex documents, I think you'll appreciate the detailed coverage of outlining, master documents, tables of contents, captioning, indexing, footnotes, and cross-reference - with lots of practical examples. You'll also find lots of troubleshooting tips for when Word's features don't quite behave the way they're supposed to. This book has three additional advantages. First, unlike many Word books, this one didn't come out until well after Word 97 was released - so it reflects real-world experience and troubleshooting with the final product, not an unfinished beta. Second, the CD-ROM contains four bonus electronic books: Platinum Edition Using Windows 95, Special Edition Using Windows NT Workstation 4, and slightly older (but still very helpful) Que books on Internet Explorer and FrontPage. Finally, and I hope the most important advantage: this is now my fourth book on Word. Over the last eight years I've spent a *lot* of time watching people work with Word - seeing what they understand, what confuses them, and what they *really* need to know to get results. I've tried to reflect all that experience here. I'm proud of how this book turned out, and I sincerely hope you'll find it valuable. Many thanks for considering it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The ONLY book for advanced users. Review: If you wish to learn the advanced features (or anything), this is simply the only book to buy. If you know nothing about computers then you may wish to consider some of the other books as well.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This is a reference work for any serious Word 97 user. Review: Microsoft Word 97 is the engine within CompuText 5.0 Classified Advertising Program. I found it to be complete in its coverage and content, far surpassing the information provided in the Vendor's program. I would recommend it to any serious Word 97 user.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: CD rom problems Review: Once installed the CD provides several good mini-programs. However, the programs require a small fee to continue use after 30 days. The links provided to get this continued use do not work. If you want to call France there is a number you can call. I do not recommend installing the software from the book.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A comprehensive learning/reference book for any user Review: This is not my first book in the "Using....." series of publications. I have found this book particularly useful for reference. Saying that, I have also learnt a lot of knew techniques of which I was unaware of (and I used to train people on Word). Don't be put off by the size of the publication there's lots of wonderful information and help. It's good to learn.
