Summary: Good book but is not typical Wrox Press quality
Review: I've been a Wrox Press devotee for a couple of years now and have purchased over a dozen of their Web dev books for their quality. I was eagerly awaiting this "Beginning" title after their incredible releases "Beginning ASP Databases" and "Beginning XML." However, I am a little disappointed in this book for these reasons:

The first 6 chapters assume you know almost nothing about Web development and in some cases even walk you through beginning HTML examples. This is a real drag and a waste of space if you've been coding for the Web at all. I think the entire book should have been devoted to "Beginning ASP.Net" as the title claims and not to "Web Development 101."

The book has several typos and errors in it and in at least a few cases, the sample code just plain doesn't work.

The final 7-8 chapters which actually focus on asp.net do provide many helpful examples, but I don't think they were as clear as they could have been. I often found myself posting the sample code to newsgroups and using MSDN for explanations not outlined in the book.

Summary: Good book to get started.
Review: If you want a book that is going to get you up and running with some applications, then this is a good one to add to your library.

Summary: vb.net as VBScript and NOT using (Visual Studio or OO)
Review: If you're a VS/VB 5, 6, or .NET GUI and/or OO and/or 3-tier developer, looking to get into ASP.NET while leveraging what you already know, then this book is NOT FOR YOU.

To illustrate, you are over 500 pages in, and waste deep in HTML listings (does anyone really Write - as opposed to generate - this stuff anymore?), before notions such as server controls and exploitation of inheritance are (very cursorily) introduced.

The book could aptly be re-titled "Beginning VB.NET - Without Visual Studio, and Making Maximum Work and Words Out of Pre-.Net ASP technology".

I'm very tempted to say: for Notepad/freeware jockeys only.

Summary: Good for Beginners
Review: If you're new to vb.net or need a quick refresher then this book is for you.

Summary: Solid foundation with a tendency to over simplify.
Review: SUMMARY: If you are comfortable with coding and web development this book is a good first foray into the ASP.NET.

I bought is book because I feet, as an intermediate programmer and web developer, that it would be a solid intro to ASP.NET.

A great deal of time setting a solid foundation in many of the background technologies which is helpful for understanding how ASP "works." All too often, regrettably, this tends to over simplification. The basic elements of programming are not covered in enough depth and with enough respect to consider this book a primer on programming.

Anther point of contention is that the book is fraught with misspellings, mistypings, and other general errors. In my experience the errors did not affect the quality of the examples, but the frequency was a distraction. After reading other posts about Wrox book's the editing problem seems to be rampant, making one wonder about their level of professionalism.

Summary: Numerous Coding Errors
Review: The book is well written, but there are numerous errors in the example code. If you are new to programming, be prepared to spend alot of time figuring out why your newly programmed web pages will not work. If you have basic knowledge of HTML, then you should be able to navigate around the majority of mistakes in this book.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Helpful, but not really
Review: The code ezamples in this book were helpful to some extent. I found it aggravating to realize that variables were never used in the examples. All things were hard-coded, which is not a good habit to get into for the real world.

Summary: This Will Probably Be My Last WROX Book
Review: This is my first WROX book, but it will probably be my last. It is hard to concentrate on the topic when there are so many misspellings and grammar errors. The content appears like it is the authors' rough drafts. If I am going to pay $[money] for a book, I expect it to be professionally done. It makes you wonder whether you are actually being taught by people who know what they are talking about...
