Summary: This book covers every aspect of satellite encryption.
Review: Satellite Encryption is a comprehensive guide to every aspect of satellite signal transmission security. This book shows governments and organizations around the world how satellite encryption helps to preserve vital national secrets, limit attacks on a nation's information infrastructure, and eliminate security and authentication obstacles to electronic commerce. The book also shows how in the wrong hands, however, encryption can be used to plan or cover up domestic and international crimes or overseas military operations. In addition, it discusses how the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency seek to preserve their ability to intercept and decode domestic and international communications, and thus would like to inhibit the use of PKE (Public Key Exchange) in satellite communications to generate unbreakable codes; and, how stopping encryption altogether may be technically impossible and may raise constitutional issues. Also, this book covers the "electronic battlefield" of the future. U.S. Military strategists increasingly believe that high speed encrypted satellite information technology -- more than tanks, ships or fighter jets -- is the key to remaining the world's dominant force during the next 25 years. The ability to automatically identify friend or foe and transmit encrypted (and compressed) targeting data to the right weapon (via a satellite uplink and downlink) at the speed of light could produce a combat edge comparable to the blitzkrieg. At the very least, satellite encryption should help resolve one glaring problem for the battlefield of the future that occurred during the Persian Gulf war: friendly fire deaths, which accounted for 35 of the 146 Americans killed in action. Finally, this book shows how establishing a high confidence level in the security of electronic commerce is impossible without the protected satellite transmission of intellectual property. It also discusses how satellite encryption will make PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) based computers, modems, web browsers and set-top-boxes safer for intellectual property distribution and electronic commerce through the hardware implementation of PCI bus-compatible real-time data encryption/decryption chip solutions.

Summary: A top notch guide to the future of satelite systems.
Review: Satellite Encryption is a great guide to the future of satellite systems. Vacca has developed an educational tool that will make for better awareness of satellite encryption policies.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Exellent resource for satellite information and issues
Review: The principles that are discussed by John Vacca describe satellite encryption technology as well as indentify important national security issues. The combination of political and technical topics make this one of the most unusual books to come out in a long time.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Highly Accessible, Immensely Informative
Review: This book provides an informative overview of the issues surrounding satellite encryption. Of special interest are the role of government in encryption technology, the vulnerability of our satellites, and suggestions for changes in policy to insure security. The book contains many examples of threats to national security, especially in the delivery of weapons overseas, and discusses the role of encryption in law enforcement. A useful and entertaining guid for novice and expert alike.

Summary: A great book for seasoned pros as well as students
Review: This is a great book on satellite encryption. It is useful for professional individuals who need to expand their understanding of the topic and for organizations as a reference and planning tool. The division into six major parts supports the reference usage of the book.

The book is also appropriate for use by students at both the undergraduate and graduate level and will make a great addition to telecommunications curriculum across the country.

Summary: Excellent designed and documented satellite encryption book.
Review: This is an excellent designed and documented satellite encryption book for individuals and organizations concerned with the use and misuse of electronic data. The book is divided into six parts that inform the reader about satellite encryption. Several graduate students preparing research topics on data and voice communication encryption methods are using this book. Following each chapter is a set of Endnotes that allow the students to perform further research concerning their topics. I recommend this book for individual to become aware of the coming satellite communications revolution.

Summary: amazingly clear, informative, yet reads like a best seller
Review: We read all of John Vacca books as they come out, just because in our line of business we need to keep well abreast of what is going in most of the technology and/or industry sectors that John chooses to write about. The funny thing is that there is a sort of a race amongst us for whom reads the books first. We do strategic marketing consulting for high tech companies. We must therefore know about the stuff that John Vacca writes about, yet the icing on the cake is the fact that his books read just like bestsellers. In this last one Satellite encryption, I did particularly like the chapters in part 4 and 5. Tullio Bortoletto, Automation Technology Marketing Inc.

Summary: A Little more X-Files Than Engineering
Review: While this book covers all the significant technology in the area, it is a much better read for all those things you wondered about in Sci Fi Could they really do that? Also the policy issues are critical to our privacy rights and conversly national security.
