Rating: Summary: Well conceived and Excellently Written Review: I recently was asked to take several ASCII text files and incorporate them into an existing database. I encountered several minor problems which this book and my limited experience enabled me to overcome. The largest hurdle was parsing the name string which the text files contained. Fortunately, the ParseName function provided in both code and described text worked beautifully saving me a ton of development time not to mention the hours of data entry (approximately 3000 records) that a clerk would have been forced to perform if I could not provide a coded solution. In short, I earned my money today and that one piece of code alone was well worth the cost of the book.
Rating: Summary: Let me loose!!! Review: I suppose that people would only tend to offer feedback if they are particularly impressed with your book. Well i am NO exception. I have to congratulate Robert Smith and David Sussman. There are many many books that i spent many many lunch-breaks browsing through before making my choice. However, there are not many Computing books that can be read sequentially from page to page. God has truly blessed you guys whom have in turn been a blessing to me. I'm only on chapter 4, and can hardly put the book down. It reads like a story. I eagerly await the next chapter of discovery. Just as i intake a bit of text that could have been ambiguous or misunderstood.....there follows an additional paragraph to clear things up. Who says IT people talk-a-load a techno babble? Your book is not a hardcopy reference to an online help series, yet it is a truly well-thought-out, user-friendly piece worthy of crossing the borders!!!! Now let me loose into chapter 5........
Rating: Summary: Just Beginning Review: I'm a hobbiest programmer and recently purchased this book to start to work on databases. With little previous experience of VBA I have managed to now create quite sophisticated databases that pass information to other MS Office applications. I thought the chapters were very well written, and provide the depth of information that I needed. I would say this is an ideal book for anyone wishing to get a toe hold in this area of technology and a must buy for any serious would be programmer.
Rating: Summary: Finally, the book I've been searching for! Review: I'm very familiar with Access, however, I had no experience with VBA, so I would consider myself a rank beginner in this area. This book explained all the nuances about code that had been vexing me for months! I'm actually writing my own code for the application I'm developing and it's working...by golly, I believe I've fallen in love with Rob and Dave.
Rating: Summary: A Ray of Sunshine...! Review: I've created and SOLD Access programs since version one. All I can say is that after all of this time this book made a lot of my DAO questions clear. I love it when I spend my hard learned, hard earned money for a book to increase my knowledge and potential and it pays off! If these guys keep writing like this they will have a steady income from me! I have probably 6 Access books and half of them regurgitate how to create tables, forms, what a database, is Etc. After a while all a DB Developer needs is "the meat" not "the fluff". This book works and i'm glad I purchased it because now I will be able to charge more for my Apps.... There may be some errors; all books have them. What is important is that this book delivers the info I purchased it for. And to me that's what counts...
Rating: Summary: Thorough review of basics Review: I've gone through three VBA for Access books so far, and this is definitely the best. Besides having great examples and an excellent companion CD, the British humor of Sussman and Smith make this a great read. Buy this book. You'll be happy you did.
Rating: Summary: Excellent intro to Access 97 programming Review: If you are familiar with MS Access 97, but are not a VBA programmer, then this may be the book for you. After reading this book you will be able to create full blown applications by using the Visual Basic programming language (VBA) and using MS Access as the database to handle your data. You will not be a guru, but you can move on to more advanced materials when you encounter the need for them. I have used this book as a reference many times, and so have my co-workers. Wrox continues to crank out some of the best training books on the market. Way to go!
Rating: Summary: This is an excellent introduction to Visual Basic Access! Review: If you're new to Access or programming, this book isn't for you. I have a decent understanding of Access from a user's standpoint and this book has made it much easier to understand the VB part of Access. It has clarified many issues for me. I am currently reading this book and the Beginning Active Server Pages 2.0 (from the same publisher) and while the information overlaps to a certain degree, there is definitely a wealth of knowledge from both books.
Rating: Summary: Leaves much to be desired Review: It seemed they assumed more than the begginer knows. Their explanations on why the code works did not provide a clear enough explanation for me to understand what is going on and left gaps that I am still stuggling to fill. Also: it would have been nice to better explain how you decide what variables are required and how you decide the syntax of the commands. All in all, the books starts out ok but then leaves the beginner in the dust as it continues. I would recommend the Step by Step book over this one.
