Rating: Summary: A very good book, but hardly for beginners Review: A well structured book that gives informative and useful examples that make the theory clear. Having learned 'Basic For' about 15 years previously, and then changing career direction, I needed to catch up on current developments in the field of VBA. The content was excellent and well structured, although there were one or two type errors that were really inexcusable for a subject of this kind. My main critiscism lies in the fact that where the real learning is done (the EXERCISES), no solutions were present. I found this extremely frustrating. I expected them to be on the accompanying cd. Instead, each sample database for each chapter was simply an extension of the chapter before, and not a stand alone database containing more examples or solutions. Also some of my sample applications did not run as they were supposed to.(The Color Schemes add-in of Chapter 14 - only the top half of the dialog box displayed. I need answers!! Very instructive and informative, but hardly for beginners.
Rating: Summary: Exactly what I needed Review: After programming in Access for over a year, the plunge was needed for the next step. This is one of the few books for the Access developer who doesn't know where to start with VBA. Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Very good for beginners Review: Although a bit confusing at times I found this book to be very helpful in the VBA language
Rating: Summary: Good Choice Review: Although I could have asked for more examples, this book was well worth the money. The book goes from the very basic up to a fairly complex development. Easy to read and follow
Rating: Summary: No , No , No , No , No .............. Review: Are these guys completely MAD or what ! This book is dreadful . The code examples are PACKED full of time wasting bugs and the main text is 'talked', not written . The main example database uses obscure Scottish names , adding to the confusion . Why not simply explain the same processes/structures from 'Northwind' ? Lastly, for weight of paper, this title is rather poor value . Litwin and Getz are supreme for Access VBA (intermediate advanced) . Beginners look at Susan Novalis . More than anything , a learner needs a clear and full explanation . Not this 'chatty' drivel !
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: As a beginner in the world of Database development, I have been longing for a book of this sort. I have bought book after book on programming have nearly always been disappointed. Most of the books I have bought either have next to useless code. Or have very unclear descriptions of how the code works, making it difficult or impossible to edit the code for a custom application. This book falls into neither of these traps. It offers useful code and clearly explains each line of code, allowing me to alter it for my own apps. This book is a must have for anyone who wants to use VBA to maximize their applications. If you already understand the basics of MS Access 97 then this book might be the ticket becoming a "power user". Great book guys.... Two thumbs up!
Rating: Summary: Good text, but plagued with errors Review: As you know by now, most programming books fall into one of two categories: expert references, or trivial introductions. Wrox books usually fall somewhere in between. As an result, these books usually create some controversy over who should read them. If you have had any programming experience, either in class or self-taught, you should do fine. It does NOT cover relational database design, nor does it teach SQL.This book covers most of the basics: responding to events, building forms, using form modules, using code modules, programming reports, creating classes, etc. While it does these things well, it also has many errors that can trip up novice programmers. In one chapter, some sample code uses the "IsMissing" function with optional date parameters. This function only works with variant data types. Chapter 16's OLE example ("Communicating with Other Applications") simply cannot run as listed. You have to make some serious code changes in order for it to work as advertised. These oversights made me feel like the authors did not test all of their examples first. If the rest of the book were not excellent, this book would have received a 3-star rating. Unlike most other Wrox books, this one includes an accompanying CD-ROM. I found it to be indispensable to completing the in-chapter examples and the end-of-chapter problems. It dovetailed nicely with the text, allowing me to move rapidly through the material. This book is also a good launching point for developing more complex VB programming skills. It is a good buy, but make sure that you visit the errata pages on Wrox' web site while you work your way through this one.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Material - The Second Time Through! Review: At first I thought this book had little content and was a bit arcane. Then I reviewed a few of my other Access and VB books and took a second look at this one. Wow! It covers a lot of info and although a bit much for beginners, its excellent for anyone who NEEDS to learn VBA with Access. The Recordset and SQL string coverage helped a lot. Recommended to anyone but the Advance Developer!
Rating: Summary: Great book, but a bit advanced for true beginners Review: Before I read this book I was decently well versed in Access and clueless when it came to VBA. After reading the book I am well versed in Access and well versed in VBA. The book seemed to be a bit advanced for true beginners, but it was very instructive and well worth the read.
Rating: Summary: Not For Beginners Review: Chapters 1 and 2 fine. Then came Chapter 3. Gulp. Help! Now back on shelf until I get hold of a real beginners book on using Access 97 VBA. I wish I'd read more reviews before buying this book. I'm obviously not alone.
