Rating: Summary: Doesn't Insult Your Intelligence! Review: Finally a book that doesn't insult your intelligence as an administrator. I agree with the other reviewer, this book assumes you know all the basics and jumps right into specific problems. It shows you how to fix the problems with some pretty cool methods. I found I learned something in each chapter and I consider myself a pretty good admin. The most useful part of the book is that the author surfed the newsgroups and discussed common questions there. One catch...don't buy this book to learn the basics or you may be disappointed. It's a great book to have after you already know the basics.
Rating: Summary: Belongs on Every Bookshelf Review: I can't recommend this book strongly enough. It goes beyond the basics that you normally get to show you the types of tips that you only get from years of experience, trial and error etc. This is like having a 10 year veteran by your side. This book will save you hours and hours of frustration, and your systems will run better. The best part about this book is the style in which it is written. Almost conversational - its not too technical and very easy to read. This is a book I have read cover to cover once - now I am on my second trip through - only this time with a pad of paper and a pen. The book belongs on every DBA's bookshelf.

Rating: Summary: My favorite for information Review: I have several books on SQL Server 2000. This is the best one, because the author gives a personal viewpoint to the material. It is filled with suggestions and explanations. The author writes in a conversational style. The sections on security and restoration are the best I have read because the author knows the subjects and gives you an understandable reason why he made his choices.Highly recommended. This book sits on my desk next to my other favorite references on SQL Server.
Rating: Summary: I hate MSSQLServer, but I like this book ^_^ Review: I think it is an EXCELLENT book about SQLServer 2000. There're a lot of incredible skills in it. It's for SQL-DBA and you'll got tired of this book if you are beginner. The skills in this book would save not only your days but also your money, weekend, the time with your family -- as the author said. The book has only 369 pages. You should be spend more than 90mins for every character -- every details, and it will be worthwhile and meaningful I take it as my pillow
Rating: Summary: Great Advanced Book With Practical Advice Review: I've been looking for a long time for a good admin book. I hate buying an entire book just to only have one paragraph on text I didn't know already. This book is filled with best practices and is to the point. It already assumes that you know how to create a database and all the basics and starts at a more practical level. Without a doubt, this is a buy!
Rating: Summary: Great book, but not so much 911 in it really Review: If you're thinking of buying this book, because you've tried everything in Microsoft's online manual "Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Performance Tuning Guide" and are still having some performance problems, then this book could be your solution. It helped me solve some of the problems I was having with our productive server and helped me understand some basics a bit better than before. It does not contain everything you need to know, but gives you some ideas how you have to look for further information and what you have to look for. It contains some good reference material, but not all of the hidden features. As with every book under 1000 pages this is not THE bible for the DBA but is a complementary book that will provide some invaluable information not found elsewhere. This book was well worth the price..
Rating: Summary: a MUST book Review: Normally, I don't buy books from Osborne. But this book blew me away with its tips. This book can save you hundreds of hours in SQL server downtime, and amaze your own DBA colleagues with tips and tricks that are largely undocumented. I won 8 books on SQL servers and this has been one of two books reference whenever there is a problem. Buy it, try it, and you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: SQL Server 2000 Database Admin MUST HAVE !!! Review: SQL Server 2000 Administration headaches? ... Well if you need a rapid reference on system administrative functions that could not only save your company $$$ on downtime and system availability but improve your response to difficult situations this is a DBA must have. I have purchased more books attempting to get reliable information and tips to make my Administration of SQL Server Database systems robust, reliable, and rapid on response I have finally found the information I needed in "One" book. I would recommend this book for Mid to Senior level Database Administrators and as a guide for training Junior level DBA's to prevent bad habits and teach the proper habits of monitoring, managing and maintaining SQL Server databases overall. Oh and the nice touch is that TIPS: and CAUTION: notices throughout the book educate the creative "out of the box" approach to proper system risk management. I hope Mr. Knight considers sharing his talent with future Administrative Guides !!!
Rating: Summary: A concise and friendly reference Review: This book is a concise and friendly guide that is great for admins. It proved itself the first time that I had a problem allowing me to quickly find the answer I needed.
