Rating: Summary: An excellent sequel to Beginning VB6 Review: I have yet to be disappointed in WROX books. I currently have 3 and am ordering 2 more (possibly 3)Peter Wright has some dry humor that helps it from becoming a monotonous book, and a lot of great examples, I only found a couple of typos in the code. I bought it on a Saturday, and I am FINISHED reading ALL of it, by Tuesday afternoon. (yes, I have a job!) It explains several things such as 3-tier applications, UML, ActiveX Dlls, ActiveX controls, etc. He only scratches the surface of each of the subjects, but enough to get anyone confident enough to create their own Dlls and controls. I have created a nice control that I plan in using almost all of my applications. Something that took a lot of programming before, will now only take about as much time as it takes to draw a new control on a form! It is great for people who are familiar with VB, and want to go to the next level. I will never program the same (he even says that in the beginning) I can't say enough good things about this book. A MUST HAVE!
Rating: Summary: I don't get it... Review: Let me start by saying that I can't recommend Peter Wright's 'Beginning VB 6' book enough! It is one of the best technical books on my shelf and I learned the basics of VB much more easier than I thought I would. That being said - I just cannot learn VB Objects from this book. I have started this book 3 or 4 times now and keep getting lost. Last time, I made it into chapter 7 before deciding that it was pointless going through it when I just didn't 'get it.' I don't want to fault the author - perhaps I just need a different teaching style than he can give in this book. It just seems that he asks a lot of me while reading this. The reader is expected to understand everything right away and I just seem to get lost fairly quickly with this book. Maybe I'll try John Smiley's book. An interesting note- John Smiley created the exercises for this book and the aforementioned Beginning VB6. Sorry Peter - I really like your writing style but I'm just having an awful time learning with this book.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the purchase price Review: The good news is that, with the amount of stuff you learn from this book on proper object-oriented programming, you'll feel that my money was well spent. The bad news is that every application you wrote before reading this - eh, you'll want to tear them apart and start from scratch. This book is a great introduction to object oriented programming. The concepts are sound, the explanations are great. The examples [stink]. In a book where he preaches cohesion, you would think that he'd cohesively stick to developing the same example further and further.
Rating: Summary: This Is The One! Review: This is hands down the best book for learning to program Visual Basic using objects. I know because I bought all the others and they simply left me dazed and confused. Perter Wright's perfect sense of what to introduce and when and how to introduce it was key to my learning this subject. Most importantly, he thoroughly documents the code in his examples so no aspiring programmer is left behind. This book is simply the best of the best.
