Summary: Filler words and Fluff... This -
Review: After reading 5 chapters(if you make it that far) this book will teach you very little about 3D Studio Max. Few pictures and hands on explination, too many filler words(this book could've been written in under 60 pages). This book insults even the most novice of computer users. Not to mention, it talks about opinions as facts. It made me so ANGRY, I hope amazon will give me my money back. This is one of the reasons I sometimes hate buying on-line. If I had seen the book first at a store, I would have never ever bought it!

TRUST ME... if this is your first time using MAX you will learn more by just playing with the program for a few minutes.

From 1-10 I would give it a minus 4 for the frustration... SAMS Teach yourself books should do a version... cause most multimedia professionals only have time for the answers.

Summary: Look at the TITLE. It's exactly what it is.
Review: Coming from much more higher end and expensive packages, I still recommend this book to beginners.

OF course this book covers just the Fundamentals people. If you dont know ANYTHING about 3D Studio MAX, this book is a great reference. If you dont know ANYTHING about 3D Studio MAX or ANY 3D Software, this is the book to get. If you people want to know how to make stuff right off the bat, get "Inside 3D Studio MAX 3". Fundamentals is the book to show what all the buttons do and to navigate you around how the interface works. I would give this 5 stars. But as you can see, people are getting confused by the title and their expectations.

Summary: Buy another book instead
Review: Difficult to decipher, hardly any visual references, and just plain boring. For a really decent introduction to 3D Studio try the Visual Quickstart book.

Summary: Excellent sir, but it's a bit dry...
Review: I did enjoy this book. As abeginning programmer and graphis artist I feel that I need the best I can get. So, I bought 3d Stuido Max 3. I started it up, and Uh Oh...

I was completely lost. But, with this book I can now perform many simple functions, as well as a few advanced ones. In my opinion this is a great book for the beginning person.

Summary: excellent examples, I recommend this book for beginners.
Review: I found this book to be an excellent introduction into the world of 3d animation. It delves into every aspect of 3d studio max 3 and even cites improvements over previous versions of 3d studio max. The best feature of the book was the cd rom that came with it, which contained step by step video screen capture showing you exactly what to do and how to do it. The only complaint that I had was that the author did not go the extra mile and explain every option in the submenus. If there were 5 buttons he would explain 3 or 4 of them and then exclude the fifth. If the author had only included a total of 5 more pages this would not have occurred. Other than that I would recommend this book for beginners

Summary: an alright book
Review: I haven't read much computer books in the past, my previous computer related book was "Director 7 & Lingo Authorized" for Macromedia's Director 7 though which the book was very in-depth with detailed instructions. Then I got this book. Before i finish reading director 7 authorized, i started to read this because of the nature of the topic. I have no prior experience in 3D modeling and stuff except for maybe creating levels for Quake games. After going through the first few chapters, i was able to create some decent animation with their instructed exercises, although u might be confused about the cammands in the exersice they throw at you, you will understand them more as you approach near the end of the book. The instructions of the exersices were sometimes unclear and took me awhile to figure them out, and even worse with some numerous misprints and and some misinformation like mixing up with the Y and Z axis in their 3D overview intro. That could really confuse people and misinform the very beginners but not too serious so most people could overcome with. Also, the book throws at lot of terminologies at you so beware, however they have a nice glossary for reference. Overall, it has lots of information for beginners and nice exercises-but not enough. you may want read some sections over again to really understand them - or maybe its just me :)
