Summary: Covers most of the material
Review: After reading this book and completing the Security+ exam, I found out that some material on the test was not covered in the book. While most was, there was also additional information that was not listed as objectives for the Security+ exam.

I would recommend this book to learn more about the Security principles, however to complete the exam do not use just this book. I would also recommend the ExamCram as required reading prior to taking the test.

Summary: Alot of Information Here
Review: Although this book is much better than the Mike Myers book, it is still filled with lots of fluff, and contains some mistakes. If you want to use as a reference I do reccomend this book, if your looking just for the quick and dirty to pass, I suggest the Exam Cram. Neverthless a solid book here.

Summary: Don't be fooled by all the stellar reviews.....
Review: Don't be fooled by all the stellar reviews. Although this book is good, it has many faults. First off, I just took the Security+ exam and narrowly passed. The reason - there was a good deal of material on the exam that was never covered in this book. Additionally, the practice exams provided in this book contain questions that are much easier than those on the real test. I took all the practice tests and never missed more than 2 on any of them (even the big one in the book). As an example the book made an issue of the common port numbers - it failed however to communicate to me that the actual test would contain multiple questions concerning less common ports - i.e. LDAP, SSH, etc. Finally, it is noteworthy that this book contains many spelling and grammar problems. In order to feel confident about passing this test, you need more than is in this book - especially better practice exams.

Summary: More of the same accolades!
Review: First, the good part. I have read a BUNCH of exam preparation books (see below) and this is one of the best in dealing with the subject matter at hand. It is well worded, concise, and even the fonts are easy on the eyes. It is not full of fluff (except for Chapter six), and does a good job of explaining terms and concepts. Unlike many others, the electronic exam is almost non-intrusive on your computer when it's run. What a pleasant surprise! If you can only buy one book, give this one strong consideration. It is worth the price.

Now, the bad part. About Chapter six - who wrote that overly verbose, we have to fill some pages, quick - let's fire up the geek thesaurus, just keep typing, we get paid by the word, we like run-on sentences, part anyhow? It doesn't matter, it's in there and won't go away. Also, this book does not cover all the material I saw on the CompTIA exam. This is most probably the fault of CompTIA (again, see below), but be aware that you will need to do research in addition to this book.

Stuff in general. I have A+, I-Net+, Network+, Server+, and now, having passed with just a "squeaker", Security+. Once again, CompTIA has shown their ability to charge through the nose for a poorly worded, can't find accurate study materials, shabby (a good southern word), nonsensical exam. But hey, what's new? (As an aside, all of the books I used to pass all of my exams - including a few MS ones - have been purchased through Amazon, so you ARE looking in the right place). I used this book along with "ExamInsight For Security+ Exam SY0-101 by Tcat Houser, Helen O'Boyle (Editor)", some practice exams from the internet, 18 years in the computer business, and some common sense. Don't waste your time with "cheats and "dumps", and don't underestimate this exam! Spend some money on a couple of books as it is cheaper than paying another $225 to retake the exam, (and you'll make more friends at Amazon).

Summary: Passed Security+ 3/3/03 with this book.
Review: I can't believe I passed the feared Security+ exam with just one book! This is a great study guide that is easy to follow and zones right in on the material that the exam focuses on. FIVE BIG STARS! It was well worth the [money]. Some hands on and this book and you will pass. I did.

Summary: The Best Security+ book I could find
Review: I didn't score perfect. But, I passed the Security+ test using only this study book. It really helped me understand security related protocols, threats, and terms. It had great exam related practice questions. In fact, some were really close to what I saw on the real test.
I recommend this book to Security+ hopefuls.

Summary: FAILED my exam! Why? This book...
Review: I found this Security+ Exam Guide to be exactly what it claims to be an Exam Guide. Highly organized, concise and yet practical. Crayton's ability to write as if he was right there in the room explaining concepts, objectives and examples to you makes it appealing and invaluable for all experience levels; therefore making this the Mona Lisa of Security + books. The subject matter and practice questions in this book are directly in line with the CompTIA Security+ Objectives and the Security+ Exam itself. I question whether the "Reader from LA" really read this book. All of my students used this book in final prep for the exam. All 38 passed the exam.

Summary: This book tells it like it is - I passed!!
Review: I had to become Security+ certified to stay attractive to my employer. it was NOT something I chose to do. With the recent attacks of these killer worms/viruses, our entire IT department was urged to get Comp Tias newest cert. I did some research on the study guides available, and settled on this one because of the authors reviews (on his other book). This book delivers. Not too wordy, right to the point, and accurate. Nothing is missing, and all the Domains are covered. And the test questions included actually test your knowledge. Other exam guides I've been through ask you questions at the end of the chapter and you just roll your eyes cuz theyre so stupid easy. I had to go back and read things over with this book because the questions are made to make you think. And that gives you more confidence because you feel like you really learned. One of the things I liked most was the way some of the harder topics are explained. Crayton has a way of taking what you already know and adding to it, and before you know it, it all makes sense! It was (almost) fun to read. :)
This book says it's dedicated to all the test takers out there, well, Mr. Crayton, right back at you. I passed thanks to this exam guide and I recommend it to anyone who wants the quickest route to passing this exam.

Summary: I passed my Security+ cert with this book alone!
Review: I have over 8 years experience configuring, managing and securing networks. This book was all I needed to refresh and sharpen my knowledge before taking the feared Security+ test.
If you have little knowledge, you may want to prepare with some other larger books as well. This one was all I needed.

Thanks!
