Summary: Excellent resource
Review: I read the instruction manual to my new Pilot III carefully, but this book opened up another dimension to the possibilities of the Palm. The CD containing over 600 programs was wonderful. I think this is an excellent recource and I recommend it highly.

Summary: An excellent guide to the PalmPilot
Review: I was really impressed with this book. Pogue writes in a very readable style, (and has a great sense of humor!) so it was just as easy to read through the entire thing as it was to use the index to find just the part you're interested in.

The CD that came with the book has an incredible amount of Palm freeware and shareware, and was an added bonus.

Summary: PalmPilot For Dummies
Review: I'm not exactly sure what I expected from this book. I'd just bought my Palm 3x, and figured, for what I payed for it, it would have many intricate features that might be well explained in a book dedicated to this new toy of mine.

This book was a bit disappointing. Everything in this book is self explanatory or covered in the Palm 3x manual. I figured out the rest myself. I pretty much just skimmed through the book. I did pick up a few things, but I would've found out about them myself eventually.

The book has a nice section near the back with reviews of several useful applications. That was a nice touch. But, again, nothing I couldn't have found out about myself on the various Palm websites out there.

The CDROM is packed with more applications than I have a use for, which is probably a good thing. They're up to date as of Dec 1999, although they're all either commercial or shareware. The program shipped with the CD to browse all these applications with is sluggish and feels cheap on my P3/450.

This is no "Ultimate Guide" book. I could've done without it. A better name for this book would be "Palm Pilots for Dummies".

If you're not technically apt, this is the book for you. Otherwise, just skim through your Palm 3x manual and play with your Pilot.

Summary: the very best guide to the palmpilot!
Review: i've reviews the newsgroups, websites, and email lists devoted to the precious palmpilot. This book written by the well regarded O'Reilly publishing house goes to the next level! You are guaranteed to come away with an even better understanding of the palmpilot after reading this book!

Summary: Should be called PalmPilot: The Beginners Guide!
Review: If you are technically astute or computer literate this books rehashes information readily available in the manuals or on the web. The programming section, although well written, is strangely out of place in this book. Would have been ranked higher if it didn't claim to be the Ultimate guide but one for beginners trying to get the most out of a new platform.

Good points:

As with all OReilly books, well written and easily read.

An excellent appendix of software. A good starting point for trying 3rd part apps.

Inclusion of the CodeWarrior Lite which allows you to get your feet wet with Palm Development with minimal investment.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: *THE* resource guide for a new palm user.
Review: If you are thinking about purchasing a palm pilot, do not do it without also purchasing this book. The materials that come with the palm are not adequate to explain its potential. This book includes a CD ROM that contains a multitude of programs. In addition, you can purchase a subscription to obtain CD ROM updates. It doesn't get any better than this.

Summary: The Best Palm User Guide You Can Get
Review: If you own a Palm, this is the best user guide you can get. All the other books on the market are for beginners, this is the only book suitable for the intermediate or power user. The Palm is a fairly friendly and intuitive computer. You can figure out most of it by playing around with it for a morning. If you're still stuck, then whatever you need to know is probably in this book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Helpful for beginners
Review: It's definitely for beginners. I bought the first edition of this book when I was starting to shop for a PDA. I was looking for information on what the Palm units were capable of doing before I plunked down the big bucks. I have sinced lent my copy to several people trying to make the same decisions. I found the book very helpful in outlining the softwware available and explaining how the operating systems works. I was looking for an update in the 2nd edition but its not current enough. There needs to be a 3rd edition to cover the most current operating systems. Otherwise, it is still a good source of information if one is trying to decide what kind of PDA to buy.
