Rating: Summary: Visual Basic 6 from Scratch Review: If you are new to Programming don't waste your money on this book. The word from "Scratch" does'nt pertain to beginners. Try John Smiley Visual Basic Books.
Rating: Summary: Visual Basic 6 from Scratch (Scratch Series) Review: Inasmuch as there are numerous errors in the book as reported by other previous reviewers (see additional reviews below), I would like for someone to give us the URL where we can find the errata sheet. I have searched the Jesse Liberty site and the web to no avail.
Rating: Summary: Visual Basic 6 from Scratch (Scratch Series) Review: Of all the programming books I've read (and tried to read), this is by far the best. I read this book completely in 2 evenings, and enjoyed it from cover to cover. I already knew VB, but this was a fantastic book that reinforced the skills I'd lost and was throrough enough to cover many topics I hadn't, before. It isn't designed for advanced VB programmers, but is perfect for beginners and novices. The writing style is great, without lots of silly jokes or sad attempts at humour. The only (very minor) criticism I might have is that it the complete instructions on creating objects, setting properties, etc. is repeated with a lot of detail, which is more reading to get to the "good part". A suggestion: have a table that shows the end-result of what that section requires as far as objects, property settings, etc. to avoid the 2-3 paragraphs of detailed explanations of how to do it. Still, a wonderful, wonderful, book. I can't recommend this title enough!
Rating: Summary: The best programming book I've read! Review: Of all the programming books I've read (and tried to read), this is by far the best. I read this book completely in 2 evenings, and enjoyed it from cover to cover. Rating: Summary: Good book for Intermediate users Review: Rather than presenting Visual Basic as a logical grouping of topics centered on the Visual Basic language, this book takes you through the development of an ENTIRE application from start to finish! No other VB book has done that! It is like having a professional developer sitting right next to you showing the development process all the way. I gave this book 4 stars only because it say's it is for beginners only. This is NOT a book for novices; it is a book for intermediate users. Once you read a book or two on VB pick this one up. It will teach you from a well-rounded angle and approach...
Rating: Summary: Useful Review: This book can refresh what you've forgotten, teach what you don't know or challenge a pro to re-think how to do things. You build a complete application from the ground up, which lends to putting the concepts you learn to use in the workplace. This is a very practical book and the author is a gifted teacher.
Rating: Summary: Good Coverage of Important Topics Review: This book hits the important bases for the intermediate programmer: databases, object orientation, etc. This is a book that will lead you through how to do things step-by-step, yet won't totally lose relevance once VB.Net comes out.
Rating: Summary: A great start to finish programming exercise Review: This book is not just for beginners. If you've learned VB before, but had little or no real world experience this is a good refresher exercise. I like the way the book encapsulates one complete application which is easy to learn yet robust in it's complexity. There was just enough of an intro to classes, SQL, database connectivity, etc. to make it interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who is simply looking for a not-too-easy/not-too-hard real-world programming exercise. I'll be looking for more books in this series.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best Visual Basic book for beginners Review: This book is simply the best book on the market for teaching VB programming techniques to beginners wishing to learn the language. The book will take you through the steps in building a real-world database application. This example is probably the best that the authors could have chosen as the majority (80-90%) of Visual Basic development is database applications. From the first page of the book the reader is learning important things about the VB environment. The book is very easy to read, and key concepts are explained very well (without sounding condescending, a first I believe in the beginners market of books!). All in all, whether you are a junior programmer who wants to learn the techniques used in building a very good VB database application, or a beginner who simply wishes to be proficient enough in VB to look for an entry-level job in the industry, this book is definitely the best one for you.
Rating: Summary: a must have for VB beginners, buy it right now! Review: This is one of the top two beginners books I have ever read. This book takes a very refreshing approach and uses a real world project to teach the various facets of Visual Basic. I think that this is simply a must have for the aspiring Visual Basic Programmer.
