Rating: Summary: Too wordy, example doesn't work. Review: This book spends almost one page explaining what the constants HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED and the like means, which anyone can guess just by reading out the words. An example concerning how to programmatically scroll a JScrollPane doesn't work, I wonder if the author has tested it before publishing. I consider the two minutes or so time that I spent reading that book wasted.
Rating: Summary: As the title suggests, a good intro to JFC/Swing Review: This book was a life-saver. Yes, the content is a little thin in places, but it gives a good overall view of how the major components of Swing work, along with concise example programs. The companion web site is excellent, much better than most I've seen. An up-to-date errata list, code from the book to download, and a forum.
Rating: Summary: Very good considering the time frame Review: This book will take you from the Java documentation to creating Swinging Java programs. JFC/Swing is still changing, so there are some inaccuracies in the text. But hey, what can one expect here on the bleeding edge? The really cool thing about this book is the interactive feature provided on line. The author seems to read and reply to the discussion group every day. I like the idea that this book does not include a CD-ROM, as all to many books do today. Instead, we have on line access together with "Author On-line". Let's see more of this.
Rating: Summary: Really well written Review: this is one fo the really good books on Swing. Nevermind ath it's slightly out of date..the writing here is very very high quality nad you'll come away with a great foundation. His "useful groupsings" of methods together into meaningful categories is so much better than the API dumps a lot of other books are...
Rating: Summary: Good Book for beginners. Review: This is really a good book for those who want to start doing programming with Swing Components. I will highly recommend it for the beginners.
Rating: Summary: A must-have reference for any up-to-date Java GUI programmer Review: Up To Speed With Swing is a necessary companion to any serious Java GUI programmer (beginning or advanced). It covers basic implementation details of components as well as key features that expose the power and flexibility unique to Swing. I've been working with Swing since December '97 and have had numerous issues (important issues) that I was forced to leave dangling until I could find someone with a solution. SwingSet (a demo with source code included with SUN's Swing package) provides some insight, but it does not cover many critical areas. Up to Speed with Swing has provided me with, amazingly enough, every single solution I was looking for. I have even been able to come up with a few real neat tricks of my own on top of that. Without this book I would have been left at a standstill. Now I am moving at a very rapid pace, and having more fun because of it. Up To Speed With Swing is "thick" in content and undoubtedly deserves the best rating I can give.
Rating: Summary: Fast track to SWING Review: Upto speed with Swing by Steven Gutz is really a fast track to most advanced GUI , the SWING. The author covered all features of the SWING. The book is very interesting to read and complete with working examples. All the chapters are organized and well written. It defenitely a needed book to learn things fast and work with, rather than voluminous and time consuiming books. I recommend this book for beginner/ intermediate level of java programmers.
