Rating: Summary: really pretty lame Review: the tips in this book will only be helpful to those in need of cornball, dated graphic tricks. the aesthetic world is in trouble if this information gets into the wrong hands...
Rating: Summary: Depends on how much you know about Photoshop... Review: I really enjoyed this book. I can understand the negative reviews, because if you bought earlier versions, then this book will duplicate a fair amount of that material. One problem that a series book like this has is the rate at which software upgrades come out. If current info is a problem for you, consider subscribing to some of the newsletters or magazines devoted to Photoshop. Some readers are annoyed by the offhand writing style, a matter of personal taste. My students and I found the layout helpful, with boxes and sidebars appropriately handled. One feature my students and I found useful was the grouping of effects in the "chapters." Although possibly unintended by the author, it turns out that by doing almost any of the more involved "tricks" you learn lots of keyboard commands that streamline work. This turns out to be quicker (beyond the basics) than slogging through the Adobe tutorials that come with Photoshop manuals (I have them going back to version 3.x). You can also pace your learning by selecting small or large "projects" then modifying the process according to your goals. The reasons I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that I had to make some modifications to improve its ease of use. I added sticky note day-glo page tabs to make its content more quickly accessible. The book could have had some page-edge coding that would make look-ups of ideas faster. I also found that some of the effects are missing an occasional command (for instance, command-T for a resize transform near the end of the Stargate lightburst effect). Furthermore, some of the tricks are redundant. On balance, I found many more positive features of this book than negative ones.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the price. Review: This is the other great book on photoshop. This book helped me set up my free page at portfolio.com and how easy to follow the step by step directions and I have had many complements on my work since getting this guide. Well worth the price.
Rating: Summary: Great book... Review: I am an intermediate user of photoshop. I got alot out of this book. It has notes on the sides of each page about a technique or shortcut in photoshop. I haven't even got the guts of the book and I love it. Simply wrote and easy to read. No fluff.
Rating: Summary: Please write one for Illustrator! Review: Reads and works like a cookbook. I wish there were the same thing for Illustrator.
Rating: Summary: VERY shallow and basic - not worth the money Review: It's a funny thing - you see all these incredibly good reviews for this book, and then you are confronted with the absolutely useless stuff that parades as "techniques" within. This is one of the weakest Photoshop books I've EVER seen - all of the contents of this book are old hat (with the exception of the Photoshop 6 coverage, which is no better than that which comes with the actual program). Worse, I read the Amazon interview with the author, Scott Kelby - this guys admits to basically not having read a single real book in his life. It shows in his writing style, which is grating and adolescent....
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This is a cool book. I am a web developer, but i am not the best graphic artist. This book showed me ways to add creativity to my graphics. His techniques were simple to follow and most worked on 5.5 also. I only wished the book was longer.
Rating: Summary: Nothing is new Review: Sorry Scott, I like your stuff, but this was a disappointment. Photoshop 6 is such a huge new update, but your down and dirty tricks for 6 was almost identical to the one for 5. You changed a few steps, but basically only had the same stuff. I was expecting a whole new book to represent the new program. New tutorials, new effects and so on. I am sorry I bought the book, because now I have 2 of the same thing.
Rating: Summary: This is a book you'll just love Review: Scott Kelby really really knows Photoshop, and he passes on that knowledge in this excellent book. It's hard to know if you'll ever use some of the info he presents, but if you want to go from expert to Power User, this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME Review: I first found out about Scott Kelby when I wanted to learn more about photoshop and saw his web site of his videos. I ordered his videos and was impressed with his skills and how easy he made everything seem. I then saw his book on his web site and found it amazing. It has some eye popping tips and tricks for text, images and creating interfaces. All you need to use this book is basic photoshop skills. This book will make you look like a professional user in no time. Be prepared that when you get this book to sit in front of your computer trying out all these amazing techniques. A must have for any photoshop user.
