Rating: Summary: A Great Tool To Add To Your Design Arsenal! Review: After reviewing many Photoshop books, I decided to purchase this one. And I am so glad I did!My primary reason for choosing this one, was that I could sit down immediately and start creating really cool, but also very useful, design concepts. Although some knowledge of Photoshop is useful, anyone, beginner as well as seasoned professional, can jump right in and start using these "down and dirty" techniques. Scott Kelby's appoach is simple and straight-forward. The book is filled with an abundance of graphically-illustrated exercises that are very educational as well as useful in design projects. In addition to the exercises are many tips and hints to enhance the Photoshop users skills. I highly recommend this book and encourage all Photoshop users to add it to their bookshelf--no--desktop!
Rating: Summary: Just say "NO" Newer editions - 'Maybe' Review: Great tricks. But my really old Adobe Photoshop 3 Wow book had double the tricks and thorough explanations on how to achieve them. My biggest complaint: The book gives you few clues on how they made the trick. I tried the first trick. Because the book fails to give much explanation, you have to hunt and peck on your own. After a few days of this, you have your friends try it. Over the weeks, the two of you finally figure out what the hell they did! And it has little to do with what the book said. Next I tried the second 'trick' in the book:. Same routine, only this time I never could figure it out. So my friends - Why does it suck so bad? For example: It fails to tell you what size to make anything; where you can find the sequence of options used; what font, typeface, size, leading, antialiasing, resolution, what options are set; on and on. After trying to work two of their tricks, IM GOING BACK TO MY REAL OLD PHOTOSHOP 3 WOW! BOOK! Last thoughts: I am very sorry for you if you bought this already. I can feel your pain. If you like the tricks in there, then go and examine the latest edition of the Down and Dirty Tricks -- I think it is Photoshop 7 Down and Dirty. It is about twice as thick because the editor apparently figured out that you have carefully construct explanations if you are trying to teach something technical. AFTER ALL - I CAN'T READ THE WRITERS MIND! Furthermore, after consulting my Photoshop 3 Wow book over some of the same Down and Dirty 'tricks', I'm convinced the writer has made several errors in the book! That and the fact that to get the first trick, two of us had to do several things different from the book to get it to work! Scott Kelby & New Riders: I don't care whether your newer editions are better -- IM NEVER GOING TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU! YOU SCREWED ME OVER!
Rating: Summary: Thanks Scott! Review: Using this book I learned how to create impressive metal and liquid lettering effects to enhance stunning ads for my archery manufacturing company! Kelby provides simple instructions that teach you the keyboard shortcuts that will speed your graphic design. His ideas are great for magazine and web design. Thanks for the help!
Rating: Summary: One Excercie is worth the price of this book Review: I had always wanted to learn how to put a image inside text using PhotoShop. Until this book, I had never known how to do that. So the content on pages 48-49, alone, for me, is worth the price I paid for the book. Thanks to New Riders and Scott Kelby for teaching me - in 2 minutes - what I've wanted to know for years. The example I mention is shown in the "Look Inside This Book" link under book information in the left column of this book listing here on Amazon.com. I'd take a look at them. I think you'll agree. But this one trick is not all. This book easily, and effectively taught me how to combine gradients, strokes, and shadows - see page 36. In this example, the result was a professional-looking television logo. There are 210 other pages of tricks as well. You should have basic PhotoShop experience, but you don't need to be a rocket scientest if you can use the help function or find that least-used command in PhotoShop. My one thought is that you do have to be a semi-artist and creative to effectively utilize all these tricks. But if you are, you have it made. A superb effort! This book will truly be on my most-used books bookshelf. I should have ordered 2 so that I'll have one when the first one wears out. Its that good.

Rating: Summary: MAC Lovers Book by a real MAC nerd Review: Disappointing is what this book turned out to be. Useless with a PC. The author obviously is a MAC user who understands a few key strokes in the PC but not the interface provided by the software. These are old, basic tricks for anyone who has ever used Photoshop, Photo Paint by Corel or other graphics programs. Definitely a disappointing book. Returned it same day we received it. ...
