Rating: Summary: The power of the shell! Review: Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy. Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.
The title of this book, "Teach Yourself Shell Programming in 24 Hours" is no joke. Even if you know nothing of this subject, a couple passes through this book will bring you all the way up to a moderate and respectable level of proficency. While this book only covers a tiny part of a massive skill, you will leave this book with the confidence and the ability to learn more and more without the help of another book. Of course, there are more advanced books out there, and it can't hurt to look, but I STRONGLY reccomend starting here.
Rating: Summary: not what i expected ...... Review: Great for the first time shell user, but if you know your way around @ all ....... you'll find more info in the man pages --- this is one of those long, drawn out lesson by lesson books..... By the end of the book --- you really haven't learned more than you could from any of the various "bible or unleashed" books ... except this is non-distro specifac ..... Waste of Money
Rating: Summary: GREAT tutorials that will have you scripting in no time! Review: I've spent the last month learning the basic commands of Unix. Where the real challenge of System Administration comes in is writing scripts. Never has there been a book so useful! Better than O'Reilly shell books..
Rating: Summary: Good tutorial to learn and practice shell programming. Review: In addition to clearly explaining the syntax and semantics of shell programming constructs, this book has useful coverage on UNIX process prioritization concepts, awk and sed. Other than lacking a few issues like possibilities of global shell variable substitution inside regular expressions of AWK and SED patterns, I found this book real value for money. It was easy to understand and practice on my Linux system.
Rating: Summary: good book Review: it's quite useful on getting you started on shell programming. As always you'll end up using the man pages to find out various other options and what not. It definitely gets you started on the right track it is NOT a "bible", however. After the book gets you going you can just continue on using man pages and other online help though.
Rating: Summary: Too many typos Review: its abit surprise for me no one ever pointed out the amount of typos in the book. i found many typos esp. from the chapter 12 in both explanations and examples. well... no complex examples are presented in the book so you may easily correct the errors but, it is not something i expected from the 5 star rated book from many guys. so i give it 2 stars to be fair. you are gonna end up spending extra times to correct the errors.
Rating: Summary: Summary of sh,ksh, etc programming and simple unix tools Review: Summary of sh,ksh, etc programming and simple unix tools
Rating: Summary: Good book for beginners Review: the author does a good job to demonstrate the basic on how to write shell scripts. The book contains useful tips and examples (real life problems you may face in your daily job), but keep on mind you'll need more advanced material to master UNIX shell scripts. ...
Rating: Summary: Great step by step book Review: This book does an excellent job at walking you through step-by-step some of the main features of unix and then the basics on how to write shell scripts. I already had a basic knowledge before reading this book, but my understanding is much better now. Very concice...gives decent examples of topics.
Rating: Summary: A solid introduction into shell scripting Review: This book provides a very good foundation so that one may learn Unix shell scripting. It also allows one to understand the more advanced books, which is very important. I thought there were some sections of the book that were a bit sketchy in their explanation. For example, the no-op operator (:) was not explained to my liking (although a fairly good attempt was made). Overall, however, the beginner to Unix will learn much from this book.
