Summary: Excellent and thorough guide to hands-on VRML
Review: Although a 600+ page book may appear daunting, the VRML Sourcebook is written so that after the first couple of chapters, you can jump around, reading the chapters you want or need, and skipping others until you need them. It's a great single book reference, as a beginner can use it, but unlike many beginner guides, it's complete and thorough. You won't outgrow it, or find that anything important's been left out.

If, like me, you are new to 3D computer worlds, it may be hard to follow the concepts and language syntax just from reading the book. Once you start working with it, however, the basics become clear, and the book becomes a great reference. Since the entry requirements are so low, there's no reason not to try out the hands-on examples or create your own worlds. A free VRML browser, some of which are included on the CD, a text editor (WordPad or vi will do) and this book is all that's needed to get started writing VRML!

One typo note: page 547, the Collision node starts with "Collision" not "Group".

Summary: Great Book!
Review: Doesn't take you through the subject in the conventional manner. After the first couple of intro chapters, you can then easily delve into any other chapter for what you need. Very useful as a reference once you understand the basics. A bit weak on using scripts to control and interact with VRML worlds. Other than this minor gripe, a great book.

Summary: A great introduction, resource, and reference
Review: I agree completely with the other reviewers. This book is has an amazing wealth of information about VRML and will have you making some amazing worlds by the time you are finished. Many important subjects are covered, from beginning to advanced topics. I do agree that there isn't NEARLY enough information about scripting with VRML, just a brief talk of how to do it. Some more examples with this would have been a huge help, but otherwise, I'd recommend this book to anyone who uses VRML, no matter your expertise.

Summary: Comprehensive user guide for 3D-graphics novices
Review: I believe that a basic understanding of 3D-graphics concepts is becoming more and more important for everyone. Rapid technological advances in hardware and software, like VRML, are bringing this once-inaccessible technology to the masses. Soon bandwidth will no longer be a barrier to potential VRML audiences. Don't get stuck in the dark ages!

This belief propelled me toward writing the first edition of "The VRML 2.0 Sourcebook" in 1995. Based on the approach we used in that first edition ("The VRML Sourcebook," which won an Award of Achievement in the Society for Technical Communication's Northern California Technical Publications Competition), we wrote and structured the book for a variety of audiences. In particular:

* We named and organized the chapters to answer the reader's task-oriented questions, such as "How do I map textures to my shapes?"

* Within each chapter, we first explain the general, 3D-graphics concepts and the specific VRML concepts important to understanding the topic we're discussing.

* We then cover all the details of the VRML syntax in terms the reader can understand to perform the task.

* Finally, we provide numerous examples--both simple and complex--to illustrate the fine points of the topic.

* To guide readers through the book most efficiently, we provide a roadmap to the book's contents for each of our intended audences.

Although we designed the book to be a user guide, we carefully organized and formatted the syntax information so that readers can readily use it as a reference. This makes the book especially appealing to more advanced users.

Because we wrote the book with the 3D-graphics novice in mind, the book is uniquely useful as a 3D graphics primer--the only one I've seen written for the more general reader. Validating this, the book is currently used in classrooms around the world to teach students 3D-grahpics concepts and VRML.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comments about our book. I hope you enjoy the book and learn a lot about the vast potential of this widely available 3D-graphics technology!

Summary: Bring Open Inventor Like functionality to a Browser
Review: I believe VRML 2.0 is the perfect extension for students who have studied OpenGL and OpenInventor. The "VRML 2.0 Source Book" brings into the light many concepts in Open Inventor which seem difficult to apply. Interpolators, sensors, collision detection, ...etc. I applied many of the examples, into OpenInventor file format, rendered the scene graph, and control the scene with an open inventor widget. Likewise, I was able to recreate the same functionality using a browser. Understand VRML 2.0 is the next level of computer graphics, and the "VRML 2.0" source book provides the mentorship necessary to get there.

Summary: A great book on a cool language
Review: I can't say enough about this book. The authors explained the language in an easy-to-learn way...I would give it ten stars if it was possible.

Review: The VRML 2.0 Sourcebook provides readers with a thorough understanding of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). Each topic is explained in depth and throughout the book are "Understanding" sections which explain, in detail, concepts that may be difficult to grasp. Also provided are numerous samples of each topic. The included CD-ROM contains all the samples in the book, as well as shareware and freeware programs that relate to VRML. If learning VRML is your goal, this book is the best there is
