Summary: An outstanding learning tool for real c++ programming
Review: This book is first rate. He gives massive detail, but keeps itdown to earth and comprehensible. Real world programming methodologyis all over this book. This book is great, but c++ is too difficult a topic for a total novice. If your starting from scratch I recommend "Who's afraid of C++" first. END

Summary: Good starting/intermediate book
Review: This book is good for those starting out in C++. Whether or not another programming language is known. It explores most of the meat in C++, and then a little more (the chapter on Algorithms will prove most helpful). If you're starting in C++ and want to buy one book, might I suggest this one?

Summary: Great book for intermediate-beginner
Review: This book is really great. It explains everything really well. The first chapter is intimidating because it just glances over everything, but all is explained in a very thorough and readable way. Good job rob mgregor -> great book I thought this book would be difficult to understand if you didnt at least know a bit about C++, like basic commands and stuff.

Summary: Excellent learning tool! Finally!
Review: This book is very well laid out! I sat in the book store for hours sifting through the barrage of C++ books before I decided on this one. For me, this is the perfect guide to the C++ language. I struggled to understand the language for years as a hack who vaguely understood the critical concepts, much less how to implement them. No longer! I think this book should be titled "Understandable C++". The only thing I would have him add to the book is a chapter on BSP, QUAD, and OCT, trees. All I need now is for Rob McGregor to write a book on how to handle MFC and Win32.

Summary: A True Disappointment
Review: This book was an utter disappointment for me. Don't buy it, buy "Using C++" by McGregor. It's the exact same book, only "Using C++" is a bit smaller.

I checked this book out from my local library, and was fairly irritated at this outrage. The only thing McGregor had changed in the book is the dedication(s). Everything else is exactly the same. Even the tables of contents and the indexes. They even have the same number of pages.

I checked this book out because McGregor's "Using C++" was a bit unclear and hard to follow for a beginning C++ programmer such as myself. I was hoping he had revised some of his teaching methodologies, but he didn't.

But, this book still has pretty good content for the intermediate programmer, but buy "Using C++" instead. It takes less shelf space.

Summary: An Unrivalled C++ Text!
Review: This is a well written, and comprehensive C++ text. I have over ten C/C++ books(including a few by Lippman which I find overrated), but this is the one that I am forced back to time and time again. It is self-contained in that you do not find the author giving incomplete examples or explanations (a la Lippman) that force the reader to supplement his reading from other sources. Also, the explanations are clear and the examples are quite good at illustrating the material. Highly recommended!

Summary: Reprint of earlier text, "Using C++"
Review: This text was nothing more than a rehash of his earlier text, Using C++. How an 'author' (I use the term lightly) can take the same material, place a different title on it, and resell it is beyond me. Thank goodness I was able to return it for a refund. If you already own Using C++, save your money on this one. Based on this experience, I won't be purchasing future texts by Rob.

Summary: Decent Introduction for nonprogrammer...
Review: This was a decent book.... however the quality was hindered by major typographical errors, and relatively few examples. It also had the potential to be a great reference book for those with a little more experience, but the lack of detail (and marginal index) hinders it in that area. Overall, the book does a decent job of reaching the intended audience, but there must be better works out there.

Summary: Excellent
Review: What a great guide to such a great language as C++. Que Publishers did it again! Since my beginnings in this wonderful world of PC's Que has been there always with the most consistently well written and insightful offerings. Way to go Rob and Que Publishers!
