Rating: Summary: Good Sell - Doesn't Live Up to It! Review: Found this book a little helpful for web design. New to web design so need something with tutorials. This wasn't it. If you want to learn Photoshop for the web DO NOT purchase this book. Try Photoshop 6 Down and Dirty Tricks (ISBN: 0967985307) instead.
Rating: Summary: A good read but get a new proof-reader! Review: I got a fair bit from this book even after 7 years of web design and Photoshop experience. It does tend to lean rather heavily on graphic-intensive designs (as you would expect given that Photoshop is one of the 2 tools in the title) and gives less focus to designing tight HTML and small sites than I would have liked. That said, the sections on graphic optimisation are pretty useful and the overall book is a good read.Photoshop features heavily but the GoLive information is fairly short and I get the impression this was probably hastily bolted on to an existing Photoshop-only text. My only real complaint (which is a nit-pick) would be that this must be the worst proof-read book I have ever come across. Not only are there typos and spelling errors on pretty much every page but I actually found at least one editor's comment in the text too!
Rating: Summary: This book not for newbies to Photoshop or webdesign Review: I got about a third of the way through this book and folded it up and sent it back - a disappointing reading experience. The first section was sufficient enough with general content on webdesign, layout principles, and image formats. But then, when you arrived at the section regarding Photoshop's tools and how to use them, the real nuts and bolts of the textbook, the author just kind of blows everything at you all at once - like out of a cannon. The pages are filled with many bold-text terms and not much explanation on these terms. Secondly, the section on the layers palette- probably one of the most important tools of Photoshop- just a few pages of general terms with hardly no explanation of how to use the program. By the time I finished the palette section, I was totally muddled. So no, don't buy this book unless you are very experienced with Photoshop's tools and operations.
Rating: Summary: Great work! Review: The best books that I have seen for Photoshop are ones that are written by designers who are well versed in computer technology, rather than the other way round - web programmers who knows computers/software very well but are amateurs to design. This book is definately one of the former. I have been creating web contents (using Photoshop :-) for 6 years yet I still find the book immensely helpful and interesting to read. The books covers a wide variety of subjects from concrete issues such as the compression algorithms of the graphics formats and its real life relevance to with regard to color management, down to the intricacies of web design through interviews with top class web designers and looking at other people's work. While this book may not be for you if you're new to Web design and Photoshop you definately must take a look if you know about the subject already and are looking for professional ideas as well as answers, or you're familier with Photoshop and ready to explore the new capabilities with the latest version of PS/ ImageReady/GoLive.
Rating: Summary: Pretty but impractical in its 'coding' suggestions Review: The graphics are inspiring and it is a pleasure to leaf through; the information on web graphic formats and the LZW compression algorithm, as well as web-safe colour and other graphical considerations when designing for the web, are very useful. You must actually want to know this stuff, though, or it'll seem extremely dry. However, it is obvious why this book is printed by Adobe Press: although Photoshop is the Holy Grail of the digital graphics world, GoLive is not so great, and one should take Baumgardt's raving enthusiasm for designing entire layouts of sites in Photoshop, ImageReady and GoLive with several grains of salt.
Rating: Summary: Design and even more design Review: There are many books about HTML and Web Design. But not many of those books give you an overview of the different design approaches that you can take to create a web site. This book is the perfect guide for your web design. It contains even some parts on the different image formats and why to use them. It explains in detail the JPEG, TIFF and GIFF image formats. The basics of Photoshop and GoLive are explained. With this knowledge you can greatly improve your productivity. Further more it contains a impressive collection of screenshots which will give you the inspiration you need to create attractive web sites. This book is a must have for every web designer, hobbyist or pro!
Rating: Summary: This book is for intermediate to advanced users Review: There are some inspiring visuals, but the user really must be an intermediate or advanced user to really profit from it. The web design and graphic concepts are well presented, but the Photoshop coverage is scant and "exercises" are a bit esoteric. I teach a class of begining web designers, and this book turned out to be pretty useless as far as a Photoshop reference goes.
Rating: Summary: The ultimate book for web designing !! Review: This book fully describes all aspects of web designing, using the programs: Photoshop 6, Imageready 3 and Golive 5. (sometimes other programs like Illustrator are also mentioned). To give an idea of some of the topics: browser differences, websafe colours, gif/jpg/png differences, Golive, Photoshop techniques, tips and tricks. How to start with a website like structuring, interfaces, navigation etc. And it even has a chapter about embedding video and audio into webpages. The book consists of a nice layout, and describes how the latest websites around today's web are made. It even goes beyond web designing and shows you how to use Photoshop as a graphical tool,(filters, masks) for web designing. Even a 'newbie' (some experience with Photoshop and Golive might be handy), can easily find his/her way in this book. A FULL tutorial which take you step by step through the WHOLE proces of web designing,(from photoshop usage to using Golive to create generated HTML pages) makes this book a real must buy, for both Win and Mac users !! 'creativity', is the only thing you must add to you web site because it is not described in the book, but the rest can ALL be found in this book !!
Rating: Summary: must have for all web designers Review: This is a fantastic book. Probably the best book in my collection. This isn't just a book full of tutorials for people to rip off. It provides a great deal of insight on web design. After reading this book you will always be able to come up with just the right look for your site. This book not only provides insight on how to come up with just the right look for your site but an in-depth look at file types, file sizes, vector graphics, web safe colors, and modem transfer speeds. This is a must have book for any serious web designer. Nice job Michael Baumgardt.
Rating: Summary: Great book, with many tips for the web design Review: This is a great book if you want to know about colors to be used in a web bitmap picture. The coverage on the JPEG and GIF formats is quite comprehensive, and mainly how to take advantage with these formats. Baumgardt takes a while to discuss PNG format but I didn't feel confident in using this format, as it doesn't seem to be widely used. The chapters on web-safe colors are also quite clear, and very useful. I also found the discussion on avoiding distasful haloes very useful. Tips on photo adjustements were interesting though not quite new to me. I must say I've got already some books on Photoshop, though definetely I'm not an advanced user. The included interviews with some highly experienced web designers can always tell you new points. Summing up, this is not a book to teach you how to open or to save a file, or nor how to apply eady made filters, though its section on Candy Eye is interesting. You should have already read a basic photoshop book, or the manuals... But have a look in this one. It is worth it.
