Summary: Great book but something you should know...
Review: I spoke with the author through email and was told that this is the FIRST book in a series of two. This first book deals with the fundamentals of Windows game programming - the *indepth* 3D work is for the next book.

He stated in an email that he had to put the information into two books because together it totaled over 3000 pages!

Personally I'm really enjoying this book. Its a nice step up from Windows Game Programming for Dummies.

I was going to skip this book when I heard that the *real* 3D stuff is in the next book - but Lamothe did such a fine job with WGPFD that I figured I'd get the set - the price is low enough! :)

Summary: Disappointing
Review: There is almost no information in this book specific to 3D programming. While there may be some 3D info shoveled onto the CD-ROM it is a *huge* stretch to subtitle this book "fundamentals of 2D and 3D game programming." The sample game at the back of the book is an Asteroids clone, for crying out loud. The few wimpy chapters on basic AI and 2D physics didn't impress me. Most of this book simply rehashes the author's "Windows Game Programming for Dummies", which benefited from being more focused. For DirectX info, you're better off with "Inside DirectX" and for 3D games you can't go wrong with Abrash's "Graphics Programming Black Book". Lamothe has some talent but I wish he could write something new and not keep churning out the same book.

Summary: Simply the best
Review: Lamothe is a genius. He explains well, knows what he's talking about, and gets straight to the point without missing important information. Lots of example and code. If you want results, this is the book for you.

Summary: Best Book Ever!
Review: I love this book. I knew a little c++ and a little DirectX. I read this book and it gave me a great understanding of it all. I have already made a couple of pretty good games. If you want to know how to make games then I would definitly recomend this book to you. If it made me able to make games I am sure it will be great for you.

Summary: Good for programmers who want to be game programmers
Review: I am new to game programming, and I found this book to be very helpful. Some of the code is a little dated, and you might have to tweak it to get some of the examples to work as advertised. Other than that, the examples are good.

If you have never programmed before, this book is not for you. This book assumes you have a good handle on C and won't freak out every time you see a pointer. However, you don't need to know anything about Win32 programming. LaMothe covers that aspect well. Additionally, he explains the relevant math concepts.

Win32 programming is hard, and you aren't going to get everything on the first try. But don't give up. Don't try to understand every little detail all at once. If a particular chapter is giving you difficulty, move on to the next chapter. Sometimes it is easier to learn something when you can see what it is leading up to.

As others have noted, there is NO 3D programming in this book. I really think the publishers should have taken that part of the title out. Having said that, I definitely think this book is worth picking up. It covers a wide range of topics, and will leave the reader with some knowledge of where to go next.
