Summary: Not enough detail or resouces to build actual games.
Review: This book did not impress me. I thought it would take me step-by-step on how to build a pc game. Not worth the $ price tag. If your new to programming don't start with this book it would only waste your time and money. I found this book very boring and it was like reading through a dictionary. The title and cover sound and look good but the material in the book is not the same quality. The author may be a great programmer but is lagging in teaching ability. If the book took a different approach maybe I could understand it. If your a very experience C++ programmer it would probable make more sense.

Summary: What a book !
Review: This book really rocks ! I own Windows Games programming for dummies and now this one...the truth is : Tricks of the WGPG is absolutely not a rehash of WGPFD (examples and...everything are diffents! It is not a Copy/Paste like other reviewer said) but if you own WGPFD you must buy this book ! It goes deeper than any other books ! IT IS A MUST ! And Thanks Lord Necron for his contribution to learn his art to the whole world ;)

Summary: The first and best book for Windows Game Programming
Review: Andre has developed one of the first and best Windows GameProgramming. There are over 1000 pages of information for you tolearn. He covers everything in a way that every beginner and expert will expect. All of the source code and helpful programs are on the CD. Plus, Microsoft Visual C++ Learning Edition is included free. The book is volume 1 of 2. Volume 2 will be totally on 3D and will be release next March. So you have a good 4 months to learn all you can with this book. Good luck trying to digest the huge amount of quality information. There is not a better or another book on Windows Game Programming besides the ones written by the the great Andre!

Summary: There's a lot more content than it seems
Review: After reading it for a couple of days, I see that this books covers more ground and gets into more detail than Andre's previous "Dummies" book. Some of it is quite intersesting. It is also quite challenging, especially the math-related stuff. So I will finally give 4 stars to this book, and would recommend it to you if you want to go beyond Andre's "dummies" book.

Summary: Trash.
Review: It's amazing how someone can be the "most successful game programming author in the world" and yet clearly know very little about game programming. LaMothe has long ridden the coattails of the game industry, using the fact that very little literature exists to help get his nonsense published. From his original "gurus" book (including the world's worst, most inaccurate voxel-accelerating code) to this current tome of bat dung, Andre has made a living pushing "cutting edge" information that everyone already knows.

First, the title is an outright lie. There is maybe one full chapter concerning 3D game programming in the book. So why say it's about 3D game programming? Why lie in the summary on the back of the book and say LaMothe covers "all types of AI, including Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic!". That's only true if you consider NAMING those fields "covering" them - his "coverage" consists of about two paragraphs. And on and on.

Why is it that the "bibles" for game programming are being written by people who aren't game programmers? It's not limited to the LaMothe fiasco - there's a new game programming book about to come out from Adrian Perez, a guy who's never written a game or even worked for a game company! The only thing he's done is write an entry-level article about portals for Game Developer Magazine, the code for which was mostly ripped DIRECTLY from Michael Abrash - and which didn't work until a full year after the article was published!

Don't know anything about games? Sit down and write a book. It's sure a lot easier than actually trying to get a job in the industry.

Summary: Missing 3d and guru
Review: I have been a fan of Andre's since the original tricks came out. Having said that, I must confess that this book left me desiring more. This book is the window's version of the original, and If you have the knowledge of Windows Programming (Win32 API) and some level of knowledge concerning DirectX (specifically DirectDraw) then dont buy this book. Otherwise this is a good book for entry level game programmers and is a solid foundation.

Summary: THIS BOOK REALLY ROCKS!!!
Review: I've read books like Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus and Black Magic of 3D Programming; all written in "good old dos" style. But this book really rocks! It covers all of the latest technics, is written in an easy language. It's a good addition for everyone's bookshelf!

Summary: Excellent Book!
Review: It isn't anywhere near the Windows for Dummies book. It covers in detail everything, from color-depth to game physics and a whole lot more. Excellent book to get.

Summary: this book is the same as "Windows game prog. for dummies"
Review: Attention readers : if you already have "Windows Game Programming for dummies", do NOT buy this book. Most of it is just a copy-and-paste from the Dummies book. The additional content (the book is about 1000 pages long) is definitely not worth buying. The two "bonus" chapters in the Dummies book are now included in the print, which explains the difference in size. And don't get carried away by the "3D" in the title : there is almost NO 3D content in this book. LaMothe says those who want to know about 3D should read the "second tome", what a joke ! This book doesn't exist, and I already paid for supposedly "3D" knowledge. For those who haven't read the Dummies book, it is still a good investment of time and money. But they had rather buy the Dummies book. Others, forget it.

Summary: This book is a BIG disappointment
Review: Well, i thought that the reviews here were a bit harsh on the book.So i bought it to check for myself, and i regret bying it.Where is 3D in the book ?? nowhere...

"Covers the latest version of DirectX including Direct3D Immediate mode", yeah right...

"Includes the latest version of the Genesis 3D engine and API Manuals ", zip file broken...

And everything in there is for novices, everything is "basic", instead of having 3 chaperts wasted on Win32 programing he could have put some REAL 3D stuff in there or at least more advanced 2D stuff, like 3D perspective tiling, etc...

And oh, the 3D primer on the CD has some chapters files that are broken... In sum, this is the worst book , i ever seen from Andre...a real deception
