Rating: Summary: An incredible asset to anyone thinking about using JSP's Review: I am not going to say much because it is already said... There is definately a reason that this book was #30 on the amazon seller list for a little. It is easy to understand and very informative for people looking to develop with java server pages. It will help if you have some java experience just because you need it in order to fully take advantage of all of java's built in abilities. I switched over from working with embedded perl, and this stuff is just great...
Rating: Summary: Focused and well thought out Review: This isn't an overview book. It will not teach you Java. If you have worked with HTML, ASP, JAVA SCRIPT, and JAVA before its a great way to ramp up. In some ways. It's as much about integrating Servlets, JDBC and Beans as it is about JSP. The examples of how to integrate with these other technologies are great. As a companion to the WROX Professional Java Server Programming book its great. NO EJB. Just causual references. Get a good free JSP web server like Allaire's JRUN and you'll be competent integrating these technologies in a week.
Rating: Summary: Not very good for beginners Review: This book is very verbose, and yet does not explain detailed information about sample codes. Understanding servelet is important before reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Web Development with JavaServer Pages Review: Excellent book. I had to move fast to learn the technology from almost ground zero. Very concise and upto date. Also I wanted a copy before the publishers had delivered the book. I emailed the author and received respectful, courteous help. I highly recommend this book to organizations making the jump to jsp or even changing from servlets to jsp.
Rating: Summary: not as good as told by others Review: I was mad looking for JSP books and have found out this book with 5* rated. I thought, this book supposed to be quite good.As I read through a few chapters, I understand what was being told by the authors. But I need to spend hours to get a few information out of this book which I should get it within minutes. The authour has a great capabilities to write long stories. But I just don't have enough time to read this long stories. Anyway I still give 3 stars to this book, as I still can't find any better one in the market yet. Note: For a beginner. Please try some reading from other sources about JSP before start with this book. You will get lost if you start from null. Cause you will get NullpointerException here.
Rating: Summary: Great book for Java programmers and HTML designers alike Review: This is the first book I've seen on the market that focuses on JSP and is current with the latest spec (1.1). It presents JSPs from both the programmer and designer viewpoints and is quite readable. As others have mentioned, it is a bit verbose, primarily because it's appealing to a dual audience. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it and was thoroughly motivated to get my hands on Apache/Tomcat and start playing around with JSPs on my own. Manning is, in my mind, building up a healthy reputation for quality computing books (Object Oriented Perl is superb, and Swing, which I just started reading, is shaping up nicely).
Rating: Summary: good, but too verbose Review: Overall, it's a good book on jsp (I got the ebook version early on). But it's a little too verbose at times. I feel that the authours could have covered the same material in half to two-thirds of the current number of pages. I guess that the authors may be not so sure about the progrogramming skill levels of their audiences, or as they state in the book that this book is trying to serve both page designers and Java programmers. So they choose to explain stuff that experienced programmers know.
Rating: Summary: Great Book on JSP Review: This book covers JSP very well. My only gripe as with all Servlet/JSP books is that it does not cover MVC and the database access architecture in enough detail. The book provided a decent example, but I am waiting for a book that solely focuses on designing and implementing large scale JSP/Servlet/JDBC systems.
Rating: Summary: Must buy! Review: It's very hard to find a book that covers the most current technology accurately. This book is the only one that focus 100% on JSP and the latest 1.1 specifications. The chapters on writing custom tag libraries are worth the price alone. It also covers the basics of JSP development for beginners too.
Rating: Summary: I feel like a JSP expert now Review: This book has lots of great example code. I especially like the fact that they dedicated an entire chapter to focus on an extended example which covers a project in more detail than you normally see. This is the only book I've come across that covers the full breadth of JSP, including the new 1.1 features. With the aid of this book, I was able to reach production speed very quickly.
