Rating: Summary: Data Warehousing by example Review: The real life implementation examples for different types of Data Warehouses from simple to the more complex, make this book one the better of the Data Warehousing books. Kimball is an leading authority in Data Warehouses since its beginnings, and the explanations and examples are very easy to understand. I took a Master's course in Data Warehousing and read Kimball's book and Ponniah's book(Data Warehousing fundamentals). Kimball's book was the better book of the two in how useful it was and easier to understand. The version I bought had a program to run reports based on the Data Warehouse structure for each type of example. It is an antiquated program (DOS based), but it is useful in learning and helps implement some actual Data Warehousing concepts. The program needs to be installed through the command line interface of the newer versions of Windows (2000 and XP).
Rating: Summary: When The Rubber Must Meet The Road! Review: There are too many books on data warehousing. This book is the (only) one you need when it's time to "roll up your sleeves" and deliver a design that will really work... in the real world. Most major business activities and all of the types of designs (snapshot, delivery status, etc.) are covered in detail. The CD-ROM includes all the printed samples, and more, with sample data and an application which helps newcomers see how the databases are queried - and how additional facts may be easily derived from the stored facts. Ralph knows his stuff - and knows how to communicate with his readers. A MUST HAVE!
Rating: Summary: Get the fundamentals of Dimension modeling from this book Review: This book contains concepts and implementation methodology associated with building and deploying a data warehouse. To understand data warehouse, it is important to understand the difference between an OLTP system and a data warehouse (an OLAP system). The author first emphasizes this difference before getting into the nitty gritty of data modeling. The author is a leading advocate of Dimension modeling. He gives clear reasons for doing so and then jumps into the techniques for dimension modeling, also called as Hub-and-Spoke architecture. Book contains examples (in the form of chapters) of data warehouse models for many verticals such as shipping, insurance, banking, subscriptions, inventory. Going through these examples will help anyone to understand data modeling and to create a dimension model based on specific requirements. The best book for fundamentals of data warehouse and especially, Dimension modeling.
Rating: Summary: Great book!!!! Review: This book give a lot of techniques for designing and building DW. If you want to read something about DW, this is a must.
Rating: Summary: A great deal with dimensional modeling Review: This book is exactly what it pretends to be in the title. It is a set of practical techniques, with many examples taken from usual business environments. It deals a lot with dimensional modeling (I could say that it is a paper about use of dimension tables in a data warehouse), which is deeply examined, gives a fair series of tips about fact tables, and runs quickly over other issues, with a general speech about functional and technical architectures. The latter subjects have been left in a not well determined state, making the reader to consult other issues for further information. It could be a very useful book in order to understand and to get able to design a dimension modeled DWH. The author's language cannot be considered synthetic, and many times I have been left with the impression that the same things could have been told in much less pages. But, to be honest, I could say the same about most books published in the last years.
Rating: Summary: The Best choice for beginner Review: This book is writen in very good language and very easy to understand. For the beginner it's the best choice, but for the advanced project manager or system analyst i will recommend other one from R. Kimball : The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit. Thanks to Ralph and to their team - it's one of the best books about DW in the market.
Rating: Summary: Ultimate Data Warehouse book Review: This is a standard book for designing data warehouse and Mr Kimbal is father of data warehousing. It is required reading before starting a data warehousing project. Mr. Kimbal introduces all important concepts on a set of solutions for different industries (retail, fincacial services, hospitality...)
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: This is the best book on dimensional modeling by the master himself.Equally useful for beginners as well as experts.
Rating: Summary: Suddenly the topic of Data Warehousing makes sense Review: This was one of the best book purchases I have ever made. Ralph Kimball makes it all very interesting and easy to comprehend. This is a 'must read' for anyone embarking for the first time on a data warehouse implementation.
Rating: Summary: An all-encompassing practical manual Review: To say "toolkit" may be something of an understatement; "bible" perhaps more closely hits the mark. Kimball and his colleagues have supplied the warehouse community (both experts and newcomers alike) with a practical, succinct, and superbly organized blueprint for success that I have not seen matched elsewhere. Few tomes in this industry go down as classics; this is certainly one. And Ralph already had one to his credit.
