Summary: Outstanding resource for making the transition to SQL Server
Review: By far the best book I have seen regarding the difficulties encountered when moving an Access application to SQL Server. Until reading this book, I couldn't figure out why my Access queries that were 'converted' into Stored Procedures could not reference each other, why my forms would not work, why the tables weren't updateable (primary keys weren't copied during conversion), etc.
All these and many more perplexing issues are clearly explained here. For quickest results, read Appendices B and C, then the first 7 chapters before trying to convert your first Access database to SQL Server.

Review: Having spent a number of years using Access to develop commercial solutions I recently moved on to Access projects and found this book a real find in getting up and running in a short space of time. Covering each topic in logical chunks I found it to be more than a good grounding in the subject. It is also well written in plain English and avoids the unnecessary complications that are often found in such books and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is considering developing Access projects.

Summary: This is great material!
Review: I have been a fan of WROX Press books for some time, and as a 'former' Oracle guy, the library by Mr. Dobbs has made my transition to SQL Server/T-SQL effortless. His books are the standard bible around my office with all of the programmers. The style of writing and depth of coverage will get you quickly through any challenge you may pose in using this wonderful database.

Summary: A professional "getting started" book
Review: I have years of experience in programming but knew nothing about Access, SQL or VBA when I got my latest assignment. I can't stand those 1000 page books that want to hold me by the hand while I build some simple-minded application through eight chapters. I just need to know the basics quick and then see a few examples of some typical tasks. This book is just what I needed to quickly get me up to speed and working on my own application. There are a few minor differences with Access XP (like changed menus) so you'll need a good XP reference also. I recommend this book to any developer that needs to come up to speed quickly on either SQL or Access.

Summary: Full of typos
Review: I just received this book so I cannot comment on its technical merits. However, I have noticed the book is littered with spelling errors and errors in general. Examples are (1) On page 11 "As but this architecture won't be specifically considered furhter".. and yes, I included all the spelling typos. (2) On page 19 "if you had an Access poject" instead of "project." Isn't this what spell checkers are made for? There is at least one more error that I glanced over but did not record. And I have only read to page 19! My experience has been when a book contains many typos then then code should be suspect. I hope not, because a good Access 2000 to SQL book is needed. Caveat emptor!! Paul

Summary: Lifesaver!
Review: If you need to upsize an Access database to SQL Server, this is the book which will solve all the little problems you might have. Not only does it talk you through installing all the necessary software, but it also walks you through just about every process you are going to perform in getting all those Access objects converted to Project form.If you are new to ADO, the book contains an excellent primer to the subject to get you started, although you might want to consult the Microsoft documentation for some of the more in-depth stuff. Speaking personally, this book has served as my bible in upsizing a 240-user Access database replicated over 7 sites to SQL server. If we found it useful, you will too. Get it.

Summary: The title says it all... this is exactly what you get!
Review: This book is aimed at the professional Access developer who wants to learn how to tap into the power of SQL Server, or for the professional SQL Server developer who wants to make use of the excellent front-end and reporting capabilities of Access. I found this book helpful and I don't fit either of the above categories! Rick Dobson explains in a clear and easy-to-understand manner everything that we need to get started... and then some! Everything from installing the database engines to publishing Data Access Pages on the Internet is covered. Provided that you have some experience with database development and/or programming, you will find this book to be one of the most valuable in your collection.

Summary: A Programmer's Guide
Review: This is a book that takes you to the heart of Access 2000 and SQL Server, unlike boring syntax reference manuals. The author's style and presentation guide you, at a comfortable pace, from installation steps at the beginning, to development in Access and SQL within the first few chapters. A must read for developers and want-to-be developers. Numerous examples fill the pages of this programmer to programmer quide. Within the first couple of hours after reading this book, I was able to dive right in to SQL 7.0 development using Access 2000 project as a front-end development tool. I have spent many hours attending online seminars and reading reference maunals, this is the first book I have found on the market that answered nearly all of the development questions I have had. Thank you, Rick Dobson, for taking the time to put together one of the best development books on the market for your fellow programmers.
