Rating: Summary: Des2K v2.1 Review: An in depth look into the methodology and technical tools used in developing with Designer 2000 v2.1. Excellent technical descriptions with useful tips. Peter Koletzke is able to explain Designer 2000 in a clear and concise manner.
Rating: Summary: Excellent all-in-one book, but could use more on generation. Review: As usual, the authors have produced a very useful and easily readable work. An absolute must to those interested in using this tool, especially if upgrading from earlier version. I would have recommended a little less on methodology (well-covered in their book on Version 1.x of Designer/2000) and a lot more on generation. Success with this tool normally is determined by the quality of the generated output of Designer.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: I have significant experience in all aspects of system design using other tools (i.e. Visio) and am working toward an Oracle Master certificate as a Design Engineer, so I found myself bypassing many of the early chapters geared toward design methodology; however, for those with less experience they can be very useful. The later chapters that get into the actual workings of the tool are well done and cover a good deal of information. I can agree somewhat with the other reviewers who say they would have liked to have seen a bit more on generation, but the Designer Generation book specifically does that. I definitely recommend the book--it's been quite helpful to me.
Rating: Summary: Combining technical information with sound methodology Review: In writing this book, our philosophy was not simply to discuss how to use the Designer product but how to use Oracle Designer to actually build systems. To this end, there is a considerable amount of methodology included along with tips and techniques for using the much improved Designer 2.1 release. We recognize that some readers are only interested in the technical aspects of the tool. For this reason, in the second edition, we have greatly expanded and revised the technical portions of the book and all of the methodology chapters have been separated from the technical tool-specific chapters. Developers can focus on these technical chapters of the book; while managers needing to grasp the overall concepts of sound systems development and overview of the Designer product can concentrate on the methodology chapters. However, we still recognize that, even at 1071 pages (thicker than the Manhattan white pages), this book is still not a complete treatment of the Oracle Designer product. Much more will follow in the next edition.
Rating: Summary: Missed the point in many areas Review: This book looks like a very useful textbook, but upon ovening the cover it does not help with the advanced concepts of Designer. Many sections, especially chapter 3, were fraught with errors, and it appears that the text was not edited for content.
