Rating: Summary: Excellent book! Review: Has lots of hands on tips, I mean REAL tips, not just recites from Oracle Manual. I sold most of my Oracle books but this one is to stay.

Rating: Summary: Very good to upgrade to Oracle8i Review: I am a senior DBA for a major international bank and Oracle OCP. The objective of this book is to show new feaures of Oracle8i, which is something you would normally only get in an Oracle classroom. The topics are very straightforward, practical and illustrative. However, there are some mistakes, and some areas are not satisfactory covered. I particularly missed a chapter on version migration. But, on the whole, a great book.
Rating: Summary: Materialized View Section Needs Updating Review: I've had the privilege of working with some of the authors on various projects in the past, so I was eager to read this book. I've been developing traditional client-server applications for years using Oracle 7. I never really understood how web-based applications, Java, and Oracle 8i all fit together until I read this book. I think the authors present the material in a clear and organized manner with plenty of very useful examples, which can be applied to real-world situations.Part I contains a high-level, but thorough, overview of the Oracle 8i architecture, including all the database components as well as the Java infrastructure. Part II contains several chapters on server administration, including topics such as, installation, performance tuning, data warehousing and security. Topics are illustrated with detailed, step by step examples. Part III discusses application development. Here, the focus is on dynamic SQL, the new PL/SQL built-in packages, SQLJ, JDBC, enterprise JavaBeans, and multimedia object types. Many computer books simply rehash user's manuals and include generic examples. The thing I liked best about this book is that you roll your sleeves up and play with innovative solutions to real problems. If the user's manual represents knowledge, this book represents experience.
Rating: Summary: Good examples, but not well written Review: Save your money on this one. I liked the overview of the ORDBMS in Chapter 1, and the treatment of partitioning, but overall this collection of tips is just that-- a set of tips for the expert minus a well-written orientation to new features. If you can glean more information from examples rather than the surrounding text, then this might be a good reference, but don't count on it to teach you the neat stuff in Oracle 8i.

Rating: Summary: Very Good for Oracle8i New Features Review: This book covers exclusively Oracle8i new features. It's an excellent book if you are already familiar with Oracle8 and want to learn the 8i new staff. It's also full of very interesting tips not easy to find elsewhere.
