Summary: examples for MS Access
Review: I haven't finished reading the entire book. This is my opinion thus far: The book only discusses interfacing VB6 to Microsfot Access databases. It does not get into Oracle, or other databases. Seems to have a lot about ADO, and some DAO.

Summary: Another Gem Discovered
Review: If you found this book as useful and enjoyable to read as I did, check out "Visual Basic.Net Coding Techniques" ISBN 0735612544. I found this as helpful for .Net as Beginning Database is for VB6. In a word, excellent.

Summary: Full of ERRORS, But No Doubt An Excellent Book
Review: I should have rated this book 5 stars if there were not so many errors.I have been learning this book for a couple of weeks, but moved so slowly just to Chapter 7. The main CAUSE is it is sadly full of ERRORS.I had just kind of basic knowledge of VB when I started learning from this book.It helps me a lot, but it makes the life hard. It is no doubt an excellent book. But I feel so sad that it's full of errors. The book itself is full of errors. The downloaded source code contains errors. The ERRATA still can't avoid errors. As the result, most part of the example code can be compiled. Although learning from errors seems a good way to learn something, it is just not the case like this. Whose fault is it? The Author, or Publisher, or Both?

Is there a new version of this book? Does anyone has the Auther's email address. I really want to email the Auther and ask for a correct and clear copy of ERRATA and SOURCE CODE.

Summary: "Easy to be read and the examples are really helpful"
Review: Some introductory programming books make things very easy when you read the text but...This book will present an example that may be used in real life making the necessary adjustments. That's what happened to me after finishing the reading and trying to make the model run, which runs using Microsoft Access Database and not a SQL one.Congratulations to the author!

Summary: A truly landmark literary achievement!
Review: Great book. Well written, concise, and comprehensive. The code examples do a terrific job of hammering home key points. I highly recommend it for all levels of VB programmers. The author should be highly commended for an outstanding book.

Summary: One of the best Intro you can buy
Review: This masterpiece of a book includes everything you need to get started on no matter what you are trying to accomplish. He speaks geek but just as much English as you need. I salute Mr. Connell for taking the time to really write it all down instead of assuming that you already know everything.

Summary: Good Solid VB Programming - Not Just Database
Review: John Connell should have been a teacher. I have about 1 dozen VB books, and this is in the top two of my favorites and probably always will be. If you understand basic (sorry, no pun)VB and want a good intro to database connectivity(DAO, ADO, ASP, SQL)stuff then definitely buy this book. There are also great sections on object-oriented programming like creating data handling classes and Active X controls for code reuseability. I found the midsection discussion on relational database design (normal form design, key constructs, SQL queries, etc.) an excellent refresher. The ending section and example on Data Mining was just too cool and really showed me how database programming could be much more than simply keeping track of who has what zip code.

If I had one suggestion for improvement it would be to look at connectivity issues with databases other than Access. Connecting to legacy systems like Dbase, or more esoteric ones like Filemaker are currently "try and see" experiments for me. I sure wish John would hold my hand there too!

Summary: My University uses this
Review: Its hard to find a book that does not just use academic snippits of code to illustrate points. Connell provides lucid examples and full, working programs - something that is rare in any computer book. He explains the concepts, why things are done this way or that, and his seasoned skill comes shining through... I agree with the other reviews - Please write another book, Mr. Connell!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The Best - defies description
Review: Mr. Connells book is the best techincal book (in any language) that I've read. He just happens to use VB to impliment rock solid database programs. I learned something new on every page - but this knowledge also applies to my C++ development work.
