Rating: Summary: It's the right book for me Review: It's the best book for database development
Rating: Summary: All in all, a very good book to get started with databases Review: I found the book dwelt a bit long on the old technology of DAO, the author claims it was because there is a huge installed base of DAO, but I don't imagine most programmers would spend a lot of their time re writing other peoples source code. In contrast the sections on ADO were a bit scarce. Overall the style of the book is totally readable and maintains the readers interest unlike some other dry tomes i have struggled with. Good job John Connell
Rating: Summary: The best book in database and VB for this year Review: I purchased this book seeking for clarity and fundamentals of DAO and ADO, But I found this book more than I thought to get from it.The author introduce a lot of information and applicable examples with professional techniques. If you want to read a book for not only the beginners but for the intermdiate programers i think this one will be the best choice.
Rating: Summary: MUST have this book! Review: This book takes you from start to finish, there was not one time in this book that I was confused. Plus, all the examples worked (something you don't see a lot with programming books now a days).
Rating: Summary: A perfect learning bridge from DAO to ADO Review: I have been trying to use ADO on a project and of course, it is not ready for prime time in a few places. Its rough around the edges. Connell's book states that and shows how to use both DAO and ADO. It turns out that DAO is used for Office 2000! So this VBDB book gave me all I need to know for both ADO and DAO - when to use which - and how to best leverage each. This book helped me complete a critical project with the confidence that it can work for quite a while. Sorry for the long winded message - but in a nutshell - "This is THE best VB book I have ever read, bar none" !!
Rating: Summary: Acres of ADO code Review: I just finished this book and was amazed at the professional code examples. The book even shows how to create a database using VB code alone. Incredible. And the author shows how to take data from a DB and write ASP pages, and even send it to Excel. Connell takes you on a fast paced tour of things you never even thought of with databases.
Rating: Summary: Great book for beginners! Review: I read the book just after I finished VB in 21 days, and I must say that it is a great book and I just cant wait until they relese the Professional version of the book.
Rating: Summary: Not for a professional developer Review: I suppose this book is excellent for a beginner/amateur visual basic developer, but if you have knowledge of the language and want to write powerful database programs, this book doesn't cut it. Most of the examples in the book focus on using the data controls and bounded controls. That works fine for simple database applications, but for real ones you'll need to write most of the database code yourself. This book just relies too heavily on vb's wizards and point and click solutions. It does say it is for beginners, I just personally felt the author skimped too much on the code-it-yourself functionality that visual basic offers. So if you are new to VB and want to get a feel for database application design, this is the book to get. If you're an experienced programmer looking for powerful database applications, I'd suggest you save your money for a more advanced book.
Rating: Summary: Gets across the concepts it wants to get across Review: This book does a good job in getting across the concepts it wants to get across. This book is very well written and its easy to follow. You'll be doing programming with databases in no time. There are a few negatives about this book though. First as other readers have been saying, some coding is a bit buggy. But the thing that gets me is that the author highly praises relational databases, but all the coding is for flat databases (or based on 1 table of a relational database anyway). He dedicated one chapter on SQL but I would have prefered a bit more on it, and prehaps on how to add/update the database as well as pulling things out of it. I had to go hunting around in other books to find that out. However it is only a beginners book. On the whole, it was a very good book and its well worth getting.
Rating: Summary: Best Database Programming Book I Have Found So Far. Review: I have read the reviews on this book and most were Five Star. The few that were not missed the point of the book. As noted in the title this is a book on beginning visual basic programming. The book covers the new features of visual basic 6 better than the other four $40.00 dollar books I bought. Mr. Connell laid the ground work for the database beginner and some insight on how to optomize your programming. Great Book. I also bought ADO 2.0 published by WROX and it is a very detailed and comprehensive book on ADO 2.0 ---- Money well spent on both books. Good job Wrox. My only question is where do I find the PROFESSIONAL VISUAL BASIC 6 DATABASE PROGRAMMING book that is shown in the flow chart?
