Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: I found this book to be excellent and for me the code examples worked fine. I used parts of it to make my client server project and had no problems. This book is just what you need when you are doing database tasks.
Rating: Summary: Read this in a few days - could not put it down. Review: Most programming books I buy I just skim for the parts needed. I cant remember the last time I read a computer programming book cover to cover - until I discovered Connells book. It is fantastic - I couldn't put it down and found myself staying up till all hours reading it. That has never happened with a programming book for me. I totally agree with the other reviews - this book is destined to become a classic.
Rating: Summary: This is THE book to learn about databases Review: If you have to write any DB program at all, you will find this book useful. I have found that a bad DB architecture can be the downfall of any program. Connell shows how to normalize tables, to limit network traffic, the efficient use of cursors, building a bullet proof interfact, and so much more. I can't say enough about this text - it is destined to become a standard.
Rating: Summary: In a word - 'Excellent' Review: This is by far the best programming book (not just VB, but programming book) I have ever purchased. It is clear, lucid, informative, and just well written. Connell is one of those rare breeds - he is a pro but also knows how to teach what he knows. That is a very rare combo indeed. I highly recommend this book to both beginners and seasoned programmers alike. That's my 2 cents worth, but you are guaranteed to find something worth knowing on each and every page.
Rating: Summary: Even Connell's own (downloaded) projects don't work! Review: If you hang with this book, you'll discover that after Chapter 9, almost none of Connell's projects work. You'll get cryptic error messages when you attempt to run the projects you coded. After spinning wheels, you'll download and extract Connell's corresponding project and discover that it will not work either. This book is so replete with errors that it is a waste of time, not to mention money.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Superb! Review: I purchased 3 other disappointing, similar books to this one before discovering the rave reviews on Amazon and purchased this superb book. After completing the book from cover to cover, I can quite honestly say this is not only the best book on VB databases I have ever read, but it also covers some excellent learning material on VB. Quite possibly THE best book available on the subject for beginners or new users to VB6.
Rating: Summary: A very good VB 6 Database book Review: This book deserves all the 5 stars it has gotten. The book gets you up to speed fast on DAO and ADO. The author has a knack of explaining this without becoming stale or boring the student with the material like other books on DB programming do. Worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Working with SQL Server 7.0 Review: We are starting a new SQL 7.0 project at work. I was wondering where to start! Connell's book took me from designing the database, connectivity, optimization - all from 0 to 60 in 800 pages. My knee jerk reaction was to use ADO, but it does not appear ready for prime time. I might use the tried and true DAO because even MS is using DAO in Office 2000!!!! Connell provides a detailed explaination of both - so no matter which road I choose - the roadmap is there. Excellent job, Mr. Connell.
Rating: Summary: This Book Rocks! Review: John Connell is a very good teacher. He never assumes. He never throws new terms at you without carefully preparing you and ensuring that you will throughly understand and benefit from them. He makes learning a most (dare I say it?) pleasurable and rewarding experience. If you are a beginner and need to move on (not rushed and left confused and frustrated 3a.m. in the morning), this is a great tutorial for you. Trust me. You will not regret it. Thank you John Connell. We need more teachers/writers like you, imparting knowledge gently and never let your ego get in between. God knows what amount of frustration we need to go through to learn some useful skills. I will buy any books you write!
