Summary: Best book to get going with VB6 Database Programming
Review: Unfortunately in the Amazon web-store the only way to find out if a book will fulfill you needs and will answer you questions is from a picture of the front cover and the comments of readers who bought the book (you did read it - didn't you ?). Unlike a book store you cannot flip through the pages or scan the table of contents (well, not yet - Jeff Bezos take note).

The trouble is most programming books are useless. They are written by hack journalists not hack programmers. Us "oily rag mechanics" are too busy writing, debugging, and struggling to meet yesterday's deadlines to have the luxury in writing thousand page books (and have you met a programmer that actually likes doing the documentation !)

There are exceptions. One is John Connel who is VP of First Chicago NDB Bank. Unlike most senior management who do not know what IT is, he has a knowledge of what his minion programmers are doing in the "back room" and what tools they should be using and how to use them (here is the key word) effectively. You just know he has trained his team well, and now it is your turn.

It is like being the new kid at school and an elder pupil shows you the ropes and keeps you out of trouble, or you are the green apprentice and the old gaffer imparts his knowledge of the craft to you. Like he says in the book, "You may not understand it all now, but it will become clear later on.". And it does. He shows you what to do; and you do it and run the program, Then he goes back and takes you through the why and wherefore of each line of code.

After reading this book, and it is a book you will want to read again and again, until it becomes a dog-eared friend, you feel confident to take on the world of DAO ADO DOA IIS ASP PTO and all the other mysterious acronyms and alphabetical spaghetti flummery that besets this subject. The word is confident. Once you have that you are well equipped to master the technology for yourself.

Summary: This book tends to loose beginners
Review: If you are a seasoned Programmer this book should be pretty easy to follow. The true "beginner" will be lost in the dust before finishing the third chapter however.

Summary: When is the next one coming out?
Review: Rather than go on about the merits of this great book - many others have beat me to it - I want to find out when Connell's next book is coming out. Mr. Connell is an excellent teacher - he presents complex comcepts in a clear well thought out manner. He is clearly an expert. So, when will WROX release another book by this outstanding author?

Summary: Good DB Road Map
Review: I found connells book to be a fantastic road map from the start of the journey (designing a normalized DB), to designing a 'bullet proof' interface, through accessing data via ADO through outputting data via HTML or even Office Automation sending data to EXCEL! Fantastic breath of information. Oh, and along the way he covered building Active Server Pages and Active Data Objects. If these terms are new and unfamiliar to you - BUY THIS BOOK!! I highly recommend it.

Summary: good visual basic database starter book
Review: this book was a good source for accessing data over different databases using VB6. Was good at explaining what you were inputing into your program, but if you run into a problem and you are unable to correct it, the problem will follow you though the rest of the chapters. The one thing that was lacking was a section on database report writing of any kind.

Summary: Beginning Database book. Mostly using Data Control.
Review: The book explains ActiveX Data control. There are some good general definitions. It was difficult to find a complete program example. I was unable to figure out how to make all of the code fragments to work. It appeared that in the later chapters you had to have program already created. It would have been easier if an entire program had been written. The coding in the chapter entitled Database Design, Construction and Analysis was a little disjointed. It is an adequate book for the beginners that want to use the Data Control icon. For other methods of database programming such as using Recordsets I would not recommend the book.

Summary: An excellent way to begin Visual Basic database programming
Review: I recently finished this book by John Connell, and it was great! I am new to programming in general, but I have some experience with Visual Basic. This book was a great introduction to database programming which is where I am focusing.

The book is much better than the average computer book. Mr. Connell has a very appealing writing style which is easily understood. He did an excellent job of translating computereze into English and vice versa.

I would definitely buy another book authored by him!

Summary: GOOD! GOOD! VERY GOOD!! A Brazilian Review

Summary: Required Reading
Review: We just had a new programmer start and I gave him Connell's book. We are building an intranet using ASP and ADO and HTML. He is reading this text because I first purchased it and found that it covered everything we need to build. This text has just become required reading for all of my programmers.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This Book is well worth the money
Review: I have found that most programming books are never at the right level for anyone. Either they are too complex or too basic. John effectively describes DB programming in Visual Basic. I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking at writing DB programs in Visual Basic.

I would have to say that this book would be in my top 2 to 3 books that I have bought for learning VB.
