Rating: Summary: Great tutorial and resource Review: This is an excellent VB book. I mostly work with C++ but I needed to whip up some quick database apps and VB seemed like a good tool to use. This book taught me everything I needed to get right to work. Although some of the chapters are quite basic if you are already familiar with VB, most of the material is excellent. The author also spends a lot of time discussing user interface design - something many Windows programmers need a refresher on. I definitely recommend this book if you need to write database apps w/ VB.
Rating: Summary: Great Book!! Review: This book is not only a great teacher of the complexities of database programming with VB 6, it is also a great teacher of good programming practices. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: SUPERB BOOK! Review: Hands down, this John Connell made it worth my time and money. What a great book to start off the visual basic DB programming path. I hope other learning series authors out there take notes!
Rating: Summary: Simply the best - destined to be a classic Review: I've purchased this book and have avidly recommended it to associates. Everyone comments on the clearity, depth, and directness of its approach. Connell not only knows his stuff, but is an expert at teaching complex topics (and dont let anyone tell you DBs are not complex) in an easily understandable format. On each and every page, I felt the lightbulb going on. Then same is true with others that have read this book. I'm sure this book is destined to become a classic in the programming field.
Rating: Summary: WROX - Does it again Review: I really have to congratulate WROX. Every book I have purchased from them has been excellent. I strong recommend this book to beginners dealing with databases.
Rating: Summary: Good Solid Beginner or Advanced Book Review: I've been developing databases for a while. This book has something for both beginners as well as advanced programmers that just need to know how to use ADO or DAO, ASP, write DLLS's or whatever. Connell covers everything in an order that makes the transitions appear seamless. If you only buy one VB book this year, this is by far the front runner.
Rating: Summary: Quick, easy, and to the point (lots of examples) Review: I am a chemical engineering intern with no prior knowledge of programming in Visual Basic 6, including erecting database programs (in any language). This book has definitely helped me familiarize myself quickly and completely with VB 6 database programming. What I liked most about this book is that it, the examples actually helped you out from start to finish, explaining any and all the background material that one who need to do whatever it is you want to do. Some of the books I've read, you would have an example, but in order to understand what is actually going on you'd litereally have to do some research, how did the author go from step 1 to step 2. This book has definitely helped in significantly reducing my learning curve, and even though it might sound backwards, this book has given me new found appreciation in VB6 that I plan on buying the first book "Beginning Visual Basic 6". Again, I just wanted to show my appreciation by writing this review, something that I'm normally to lazy to do. Anyway, if you're considering database programming buy this book b/c their's a nice balance of everything.-Charles
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT Book...VERY POOR support! Review: I have purchased several Visual Basic Database Programming books and returned most of them. This book is by far the best I have yet discovered. Most programming books are written by technical wizards who also have the ability to write a book. Alas, technical knowledge and writing skills do not necessarily make a person a teacher. John Connell has it all! He combines technical knowledge and excellent writing skills with the ability to teach. Furthermore, he has that unique ability to teach a technical subject like database programming to an inexperienced programmer. I highly recommend this book. The only drawback has been the lack of support from the publisher, who answers email requests for help with a form letter stating that my help request has been received, and that the appropriate person will get back to me. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED A HELPFUL RESPONSE FROM 4 REQUESTS FOR HELP. Additionally, the source code that I downloaded from the WROX site Is not always accurrate. Several downloaded projects result in error messages.
Rating: Summary: Not just another Visual Basic book Review: Actually I have been looking for this book for a while without knowing it. I own several VB books, and they are all nothing more than variations on a theme. After I read an entire VB book, I realize that there was very very little new info. But Connell's book is different. He must have realized this fact because his book is full of new VB techniques and information. This book has things you won't find elsewhere. If you have read any VB book at all, pick up this as the second book to read. I was amazed at how much new information I learned from this book - much more than several other VB books put together
Rating: Summary: John Connel is a great narator of VB 6.0 Review: I highly recommend this book. John Connell takes the reader through topics with great detail and then shows the reader the Wizards that will save time instead of the other way around. Although the book does have some incomplete examples that frustrated me, I still got a lot out of the book. Great teacher writing a great book.
