Rating: Summary: Slow start, then ZOOMS! Review: After the first 10 chapters or so, I sincerely felt I may have wasted my time and money. All that had been presented were code snippets of how to create the example application he was building. Beginning with Chapter 11 though, the book soared and was well worth the time and money. I would recommend this book to anybody at the beginning level of VB and databases. Intermediate programmers should skim the first 10 chapters to get to the really good stuff.
Rating: Summary: Beg, Borrow, or Steal This Book! Review: Anyone who wants to use VB and/or a database needs this book. Most VB books seem to raise more questions than they answer. Beginning Visual Basic 6 Database Programming must have been written just for me. Reading along, I feel a twinge of stress as a difficult question begins to form in my mind. And suddenly, John Connell seems to have sensed my concern. He not only crystallizes my anxiety into a question, but also leads me through the answer, all the while amazing me at how simple it really was. Perhaps I wouldn't be such a fan if I didn't have a rudimentary background in VB. Had I started with this book, I probably wouldn't even recognize the roadblocks that have kept me from trying to do more in the past. But within the first seven chapters all the previous roadblocks have been turned into hurdles, and I've become confident I can jump them. This is the best book I have ever read on any computer-related topic. John Connell is a very smart man - he thinks just like I do! If I were smarter, that is...
Rating: Summary: Best Programmer? Review: I have just finished this book after picking it up a several days ago and devoring it. Ive read a few chapters twice. Mr. Connell has to be one of the best programmers ever! I have recommended this book to all my friends and co-workers. Read it and you will know what I mean.
Rating: Summary: concept thinking in programming Review: if you know some abt the VB controls but still need some more views and understandings to make some tricks and ideas to shine on your databse, you 'd better try this book. Beginner who know just MS.ACCESS is not appropriate to this book. It is not a kind of Step-By-Step book to guide u along VB tales. But it sounds like a complexion of Computer talk show (you will found some jokes inside), Tips & Tricks stories and some advance Stuff at the end of the show. Most of them are about DAO. The remaining is ADO, ASP flavor, Datamining, and the most i love is how to send ur stuff back to other application, such as Excel or HTML.
Rating: Summary: Excelent. Most recommended Review: Fluent, Clear, interesting. You could be stucked with a bad book and think this subject is boring, and that you'll never be programmers...but, than comes Mr. Connell with this book.
Rating: Summary: Professional - The Complex Made Understandable Review: Connell is the consumate professional / teacher. He takes a complex subject and walks you through it in a way that is fun, understandable, real world, and complete. His book is so good that you dont realize just how much you have learned until you finish and look back. The style reminds me of my very best top notch university instructors. Someone knew the stuff so well, they knew could separate the wheat from the chaff and could effortlessly present the material in a rational and logical manner. If you ever had a professor like that - you will immediately know what I mean when you read this book. I have never taken the time to write an on-line (or off-line) comment before but had to for this professional work. ITs nice to see books that are presented for real world situations.
Rating: Summary: The Big Red Book Review: I have taken several on-line classes, and the students refer to this as John's Big Red Book. It seems that this book has developed a huge following - and I can see why. Its a must have for any developer- new or experienced.
Rating: Summary: Didn't know DB or VB, Did know OOP. Well, "To err is ..." Review: Very good book to learn DB and VB at the same time. One thing: I found over 15 points of mistakes and inconsistancies on ADODB example, pages 605 to 614. Important ones: -Cannot Add record, should have been mentioned. -Use tag, DataSource doesn't work. Crashes system. -cmdButton_Click is messed up but easy to fix. I think Mr. connell had only one night to hand in this example and started working at 11:30 PM. Besides these few pages, book is what expected.
Rating: Summary: I HAVE READ TWO BOOKS FROM WROX AND I AM IMPRESSED!! Review: I have read two books from Wrox : a_)Beginning Visual Basic 6 Database Programming by John Connell b-) Beginning Visual Basic 6 by Peter Wright ...I am impressed..These are wonderful books!. I have been teaching physics for more than 20 years, so I know what does that mean teaching to beginners...but these guys are the best!!!By the way, I have read more than 10 books about programming from other authors...but...
Rating: Summary: An outstanding tutorial for entry-level VB development! Review: This was my first WROX book and I was very pleasently suprised. Coming from SAM's '21 Days' series as virtually a VB 5 beginner I found this book to be much more practical, A few steps above most VB books of the 'Hello World app' variety. With 1 1/2 years in desktop/network support and some MS Office programming I was able to wrangle an entry-level position as Web Developer with a small software shop after working thru Beginning VB 6 Database and WROX's Beginning ASP 2.0. WROX tutorials are the ONLY books I've yet found that really prepare one for the MIS working world. I'm currently finishing up Professional VB 6 Databases and Professional ASP 2.0 and am taking on increasingly complicated projects at the office. For the VB beginner this book can't be beat!
