Summary: Take VB6.0 to the limit in record time
Review: I really thought that writing VB - DB apps would be way beyond me. It always seemed to intimidating because there was just so much to know. So many details. Mr. Connell takes you from start to finish and before you know it, you have some bullet proof database apps up and running. But along the way, you also learn about the user interface - the most variable part of most programs. This book covered good technique, good coding, how to anticipate user's mistakes, along with teaching me ASP, ADO, DLLs, DAO, and more alphabet soup. I never took the time to review a book before, even though I read quite a few. But this one deserved it. Well, thats my 2 cents worth.

Summary: A great book for someone just starting
Review: I am a little new to VB database programming, but I am really impressed with Mr. Connell's book. You might find alot of examples in DAO. You can change the DAO examples to ADO or RDO it's up to your needs. I really enjoyed Chapter 5 programming the Bulletproof User interface and Chapter 7. I re-wrote chapter five example into a ADO application. My application changes colors once the user clicks edit or add record and handles record navigation. I also included validation for required fields.

Everyone asks me how do I do that. Now, If I could only find the same type of book for ASP database programming. hummm!

Summary: Very well presented!
Review: It takes a lot to make me go out of my way and give a good or bad review for an author; i.e., they'd have to be really good, or really bad.

In this case, I tip my hat to John Connell for his lucid style of presentation, and to Wrox Press for once again coming up with an excellent book (my second one so far).

I actually started reading on Chapter 11 about ADO (with a little DAO background), and I actually understood and feel confident that I learned what the author was trying to convey! John Connell uses plain language, something even a programmer can appreciate!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Summary: Too Many Books....This one Stands above the rest
Review: The problem I have is that there are just way too many VB books to choose from. I usually will buy a book and read 500 pages only to find one new idea (when I'm lucky). It seems to me that there is just way too much noise on the VB book shelf. Mr. Connell's book definately stands apart from the crowd of me-too VB books. Mr. Connell provides acres of code with informative text and excellent design ideas that you learn something new - literally in each paragraph. This book stands head and shoulders above the rabble of VB books on the shelves. Thanks, Mr. Connell. This was well worth my hard earned money and well worth the time I invested to read it.

Summary: Web Development made easy
Review: We are building a corporate intranet and that is new to us. I picked up Mr Connell's book a month ago. Then when we were instructed to build the intranet, I remember enjoying his chapter on ASP, DLLs, Cookies, etc. Everything we needed was there - and more. I got up to speed very quickly on the intranet - so I learned even more from this fine book that I bargained for. Thanks, Mr. Connell

Summary: Read this twice
Review: I've read this book twice and found tips and suggestions I missed the first time. This provides insight in multiple levels - programming and the philosophy of programming databases. I've never read anything quite like this book.

Summary: A Christmas present for my team
Review: I found this so useful, I ordered the text for my team. The group ranges in experience from novice to programming animal. But each will find something useful in Mr. Connell's text

Summary: Useless code.
Review: If you are interested in designing a front end for a database don't waste your time looking for ideas in this book. The code, predominantely DAO oriented, is riddled with errors. Even if you download it from wrox.com you will find out that it is unworkable. I'd hate to see one of his so called 'professional' apps.

Summary: Where has this book been the last 5 years...!
Review: I stumbled upon this book via some hyperlinks. The reviews looked too good to be true, but I ordered the book anyway. Well - it is fantastic! I read it cover to cover over a long weekend. My wife was ready to divorce me, but it was worth it...I learned so much from this book that I simply can't believe it.

Summary: A must have - dog eared friend
Review: Anyone (and I mean anyone) working on databases with VB can learn from this book. Im an advanced developer but found so many excellent professional code techniques here that I recommend this to all my associates. It's bound to become a standard. In fact, the book is now on each of my employees book shelves.
