Rating: Summary: Not just the documentation Review: Although there's a lot in this book that you could find in the documentation if you looked long enough, there's also lots of new stuff that I haven't seen anywhere else.Perhaps the reviewer who says it's just a rehash is talking about the ADO.NET Programmers Reference, which I've also got and it's really just a printed and commented summary of the documentation. Unless you have loads of time to scour the documentation and endlessly experiment, this is a great way to learn ADO.NET.
Rating: Summary: Great reference, but not enough real world examples Review: Although this book lacks real world examples, it provides complete reference for ADO.NET, and this book has examples in both VB.Net and C#. For ADO.NET beginners to start to write code in ADO.NET, this book is not enough. This book is for developers who already have some ADO.NET experience, and need some information about specific method or property. --Reviewed by Richard X.
Rating: Summary: Good book but not a lot of source code available for VB.Net Review: As usual, Wrox gives you a book full of important knowledge, but the source code in VB.Net, as promised, is rare. There is only a few examples written in VB.net. I was used to much more source code in VB6. I don't recommend this book for somenone that doesn't have time to translate the code in VB.NET. Great book for C# developer
Rating: Summary: Great Walkthrough and Reference Review: I found this book to be very helpful. I already know ADO found this book to present information that is very helpful so that I can make use of the new features like the DataSet in ADO.NET. Doug Seven's chapter's were especially helpful.
Rating: Summary: This book is very useful. Review: I liked it that each chapter is based around the most important parts of ADO.NET, so that I know exactly where to go to get the help I need. This makes it almost like a reference manual. It also has excellent coverage of XML with ADO.NET and XML Web Services. My copy is getting worn out.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I see that most of the complaints are about there not being any vb code. Granted, that is a reasonable complaint, but this book covered so much that other books haven't touched! I am amazed at how much I have learned from this book! I am finally excited about .NET instead of dazed and confused! Even if you know the general stuff, you need this book. I learned how to do things that I didn't know were even possible! This is the very first multi-author wrox book that I have given a good rating...you guys got this one right!

Rating: Summary: Provides a nice foundation to build on....... Review: Let's face it, ADO.NET introduces some brand new concepts and design philosophies that even classic ADO experts are not familiar with. I found that this book provided me with a great ADO.NET foundation to build on. I have read many ASP.NET/WinForm development books and I am of the opinion that ASP.NET/WinForm developers will benefit from a book like this *before* diving into their ASP.NET or WinForm developement books.
Rating: Summary: A few things... Review: Many of the chapters in this book was really good, but a few things I didn't like : * Not a word on concurrency!?!?!? I bought the book to get some thoughts on .Net concurrency strategies, but they completely avoided that subject. * Did the authors of this book communicate at all during the writing of the book? A lot of things was brought up two or more times in different chapters. Propably the last time I buy a book where each chapter was written by a different author. /Per Hultqvist
Rating: Summary: good book if you can ...[edit] errors Review: Overall, this was a good read -- especially for existing programmers who are looking more at ADO.NET for things like architecture, usage, differences with ADO 2.x, etc... The book greatly simplified ADO.NET in my mind, and gave some great starting points in my own research. My only problem with the book is that there are quite a few errors in the text that, in my opinion, the editors should have caught. For example, if you're new to OOP, you'll probably want to know the difference between overloading a method and overriding a function. This book on several occasions uses one term where another should have been used and vice-versa. Overall, however, this is the best book on ADO that I've read so far... _howard
