Rating: Summary: Telecom Professor comments on "Telecom Survival Guide" Review: One of the best Telecom foundation books I have ever read. Excellent overview and comprehensive coverage of Telecom today. Particularly beneifical for readers that would like a comprehensive overview and reference for Telecom technologies in business language delivery. Witty and refreshing. My highest recommendation for professionals in Information Technology that would like a single reference for Telecom. Assumes minimal technical knowledge. Perfect book for beginning Telecom or computer students at any University or College. Project leaders, telecom and computer professionals will also enjoy this reference. I will be looking forward for future publications from Mr. and Mr. Moulton.

Rating: Summary: Convoluted and full of mistakes Review: The least one must expect from a "telecommunications survival guide" is that it got the facts right. This book does not pass the test. The authors get simple things wrong, which makes me wonder whether they have sufficient competency to write such a book. For example, they state that circuit switched service is the same as connectionless service. Gentlemen, this is fundamentally wrong! Moreover, the entire book is somewhat convoluted and confusing. Sometimes I had a hard time to grasp what the authors are trying to get at. I doubt that the Professor who wrote the positive review below has really read the book. I strongly discourage anybody to buy this book.

Rating: Summary: Convoluted and full of mistakes Review: The minimum requirement for a technology-oriented book would be that it gets the technology right. The Telecommunications Survival Guide does not pass this test. There are plenty of errors in there, some of them on a very conceptual level. For example, the authors confuse connection-oriented service with circuit switched service. These concepts are so basic, that they really should not be confused by any expert in the field. The writing style is supposed to be casual and funny, which is a good approach, however, often the text is somehow convoluted. Concepts are badly explained, and even in the examples it is sometimes hard to figure out what the authors are getting at. Overall comment: Not recommended at all, I'd give zero stars if there were the option.
Rating: Summary: Lots of factual errors Review: Was provided to me by my employer (a CLEC on the west coast), and many of my 'old telco' peers were amazed at the mistakes. Many factual errors abound. Particularly, simple definitions and descriptions were all oversimplified to the point of misrepresenting the terms. Also, there is no glossary. This book has promise, would love to compare the 2nd edition, assuming it has corrections and glossary.
