Rating: Summary: Yoda Speaks! Review: I have all three editions of this book and the 3rd is the best. This book is 'it' for Win32 programming. Its hard to imagine how it could be improved on. (Well, Ok, MS could kill 'Whimpy Windows' and just do NT, then all the "This doesn't work on Win95" references could be dropped, but thats a Gates decision as to when idiots will stop wasting their time on bad O/S'es) I write a lot of low level systems programming code and just couldn't do my job without this book. If you subscribe to MSDN or get MSJ you'll be familiar with Richter as he is the author of most Win32 columns and techmical articles for Microsoft. I don't know what else to say except I never posted a review of this book before because I couldn't imagine anyone working in a Win32 environment without it. If you had to choose two books to take to a desert island choose K&R and Richter. I'd buy it if it cost $500.00, enought said? Go for it!
Rating: Summary: Well written book on largely obscure topics Review: I have found JR's well-written book to non-essential for most tasks. Most developers rarely use any of the information in here. So get the basic books first. However, when you need to tackle something unusual, you might find this book indespensible - but check the MSDN CD's first, they might have all of the info that you need. Due for an overhaul soon I suspect.
Rating: Summary: It's a nice book about system program Review: I like the book every sample all nice. The author is very earnest. I wish who don't like the book must read it again. It is really a nice book.
Rating: Summary: I love this book! Review: I work as a Win32 Software Engineer and this has to be the best book I've ever read. There are some advanced topics in this book, but they're explained in a way that anyone can understand. Great, great book for the serious developer!
Rating: Summary: Would be nice if it covered more general advanced topics. Review: I would like to have seen this book cover general advanced topics in Windowss programming, like Splash Screens. These are easy to do in MFC, but I'd like to see how to do this with C or C++.
Rating: Summary: Pretty much THE book on a lot of topics Review: Jeff Richter is one of the paragon authors of all things Windows. Advanced Windows is a necessary and complete reference book for anyone interested in, well, Advanced User-Mode programming. I know of no other reference that so completely covers process space mapping, memory mapping, threads, and the proper use (and abuse!) of the synchronization primitives exposed by Win32. Ignore the reviews you read here and go to your nearest bookseller if you like; this book is always in stock, and a quick perusal should convince you.
Rating: Summary: Absolutly Great ! Review: Jeffrey Richter's Advanced Windows is easily the most frequently used (and borrowed) book on my computer bookshelf. It is well written, complete, and contains descriptions and examples of non-GUI Windows programming you simply can not find anywhere else. I plan on buying both of his new books as well. All of his books are utterly without hype - it's like reading just the meaty parts of MSJ/MSDN magazine. Long Live Jeff Richter!

Rating: Summary: Nice to have - tough to read Review: Nice book. Takes a toll of programmers who think they KNOW windows
Rating: Summary: NOT FOR THE BEGINNER, BUT GREAT FOR A REAL WIN32 PROGRAMMER Review: NO MFC OR C++, no intro to the c language which it uses solely! This is an advanced book! Covers many topics Pertzold(Programming Windows) doesn't. Great for getting into the cracks of the Win OS! Definitely not for newbies, but for anyone looking to really become a professional win32 programmer, this is the book! To anyone but a real programmer the topics covered aren't easy nor for everyone. Much of the book is about Kernel Objects, inner workings, sharing objects between process and thread boudaries. Thread locks and scheduling are also detailed plus much much more!
