Summary: Can't begin to say how disappointed I was!!
Review: Can I rate this book with "negative 0" stars. The publisher hires writers and not IT professionals to write their books. This book is so full of errors I could not even use it. This book will do nothing but confuse you. I judge a book by how accurate the content is inside. This author obviously knows absolutely nothing about Windows 2000. It seems to me that he copied from a bunch of notes that he compiled from the internet or someting. My sincere advice, stick to Sybex. They are the real IT book folks. Their books are accurate and won't let you down.

Summary: I would give this book less than 1 star if that was possible
Review: I agree, this book is written like a dictionary that has been copied and adapted from other dictionaries! It is extremely dull and of very little value. The questions at the end of the chapter are ambiguous and obscure at best. This book has aided in putting me right off Windows 2000 server, in fact I think I'm going to go over to Linux ;-)

Summary: Horrible.....
Review: I received this book as a text for a class I am taking. I have been working with Windows operating systems for quite a long time and was surprized and amazed at the horrendous quality of this book. I have read quite a few books by this publisher that were clear, concise and valuable sources of information. After getting to chapter three in this book, I was very surprised with the quality of this product. MSPress and Sybex do a much better job with Windows 2000.

Summary: Good Text on Windows 2000 Server
Review: I used this text and the MCSE Guide to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional for the Install 2000 Professional/Server course this summer at a local community college. The text is well written and strives to match Microsoft's MCSE Exam for Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. The extensive hands-on projects provided practice skills for my students. As an instructor, I appreciated the extensive course materials (chapter outlines, PowerPoint presentations, test generators).

I would recommend that prospective test takers purchase a practice test. Perhaps the TestOut LabSim (Windows 2000 Server Lab Simulator) and practice test.

Summary: Mrs.
Review: While reading this book I got an impression that the author does not have any practical experience with the operating system but merely paraphrases what he has heard from others or read about it. Some of the elementary concepts are explained in a way that it makes them difficult to understand and remember for the test. An example is when the author explains the difference between SLIP and PPP. In other places, the author cuts his explanations short leaving the readers confused about the subject. For example, while talking about the VPN server the author points out that it is used for connections to the network through the Internet using PPTP or L2TP. Then he gives some screenshots and directions for installing this server, but he never explains why do you have to enter a range of IP addresses into the server setup wizard to be assigned to clients who will connect over the Internet. I would think that anyone who comes through the Internet will already have an IP address assigned to them and will not need another one from the VPN server. The author also misrepresents some concepts. For example, while describing service packs and their installation he defines slip streaming as "installing only a specific portion of a service pack instead of the entire update." Here is Microsoft's definition: " Windows 2000 supports service pack slipstreaming, which means that the service pack is added directly to the operating system's distribution share during installation." And "Service pack slipstreaming refers to a service pack being integrated with an updated version of Windows 2000 on a CD-ROM or on a network share." In fact the author does not even know how to apply slipstreaming since while describing switches for update.exe he never mentions the most important switch you should know - the /slip switch. The author says you have to reinstall a service pack after you add new components. Wrong. He has never installed one. Only a novice would write this since every time you install a new Windows service or component, Windows asks you for the service pack CD first and only then for the original server CD. Here is what Microsoft says: "Once the service pack has been applied, if the system state changes (for example, adding RAS after the service pack is applied), Windows 2000 installs the correct files, whether those files originate from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or from the service pack. The eliminates the need to re-apply the service pack whenever the system state changes." I compared this book to a similar study guide for Windows 2000 server published my Microsoft and see that while they have something in common, the author does not describe many or the concepts mentioned in the Microsoft's book. That makes me wonder if he can teach me all I need for this test or I have to read something else in addition. The bottom line. If you want to know the term, such as MPPE, CHAP, SAP, and others, then this is the book for you since the author will shoot them at you like from a machine gun. As far as practical knowledge is concerned, my opinion is that you had better look elsewhere.
