Rating: Summary: Intro Networking Book Review: Easy to Understand...Author gave good, everyday analogies to help the reader understand a very difficult topic. Possibly to specific in some network concepts and too broad in others...otherwise good reading ;)
Rating: Summary: Excellent for networking wanna-be's & home-LAN hobbyists Review: Hayden was entertaining and informative. This is an excellent reference for those interested in setting up home-based LANS with little or no prior experience. As an introduction to a complicated subject, Hayden succeeded in giving this reader plenty "ah-hahs" in each chapter. The book is limited in its coverage of the real world problems that make up the bulk of the networking profession, but these readers won't be trying to learn networking in 24 hours anyway. If you are going to have just one networking book on your shelf, make it this one. I will be considering other Sams books in the future.
Rating: Summary: Concise, yet in-depth!!! Review: I believe Hayden hits all the major concepts well. Without dulling the issues with unecessary rhetoric! His analogies make the theory parts work well together. "B-Luv"
Rating: Summary: Better off with any other book on the subject! Review: I found this book to be full of errors and a total waste of my time. If you are a TOTAL beginner and don't have a clue maybe it would be ok. But it lacks depth, is error prone, and repeats. You would be much better off reading the Networking Essentials Study guide ISBN #0764531778 - yea - I know it cost more but you get what you pay for, unless you buy this book - then it is a waste of all your money. Take it from me I passed the Networking Essential's exam and am a MCP, better of with other books.

Rating: Summary: Great for a beginner Review: I was a person who knew something about PCs, but knew nothing about networks and I felt this book was very informative. When you are done, you will at least know what the jargon means and a little bit about the hardware and software associated with networks. If you are a beginner, this is the book for you. If you are already a network administrator, it is probably not for you.

Rating: Summary: An accessible, jargon minimized, explanation of networking. Review: In "Teach Yourself Networking in 24 Hours," Matt Hayden delivers a terrific primer on networking-- an accessible, jargon minimized, explanation of what happens after your computer is plugged into the network jack--that can be read piecemeal or sequentially, in less than the advertised 24 hours of time. If you need to specify the bare bones design of a basic network architecture for an IS development project, this text will deliver the goods. In the end, you'll be conversant in the basics of network topology and terminology, able to hold your own ground in a conversation with professional "net-workers".
Rating: Summary: not worth the time Review: This book is cheap conpared to most computer books and there is a reason for that. The thing that you'll waste, other than money, is your precious time. He repeats many things throughout the book. When you finish some of the chapters you realize that there was nothing, it was a desperate attempt to add another chapter. Some chapters are less than 4 pages!!!!!! Of course you can finish that in in less than an hour. The topics that he talks about the most are Win NT, NetWare and UNIX and he mentiones how they came into existance at least 3 times throughout the book. I can concentrate all the information from the book and put it onto 10-15 pages, not the 425 he managed to streach it onto. This was the third of the 24 hour books I've read, and it will be the last. Save yourself the time and spend the extra money for the other types of books out there. I would only recomend this book to a total begginer and one that dosen't really want to get into depth about networking. And by that I mean you learn about routers, cables and switches, nothing more, the rest of the book is gibberish. But most people aren't like that. I really recomend you look for another book.
Rating: Summary: Tries to teach everything but doesn't teach much Review: This book is supposed to teach you network design and admin, amongst other things including basic computer knowledge, in just 24 hours. If that is possible, all those network designers and administrators out there will be out of a job very soon. The only saving grace is that a bit of everything pertinent to networking is covered. For me, that's still insufficient reason to read the book.
