Rating: Summary: Disappointing Little or Nothing to do with Websphere Review: The best thing about this book is the title. This book has very little to do with Websphere or Websphere Studio(WSAD). It explains almost nothing about the differences between Build Paths, Dependent jars, or any of the Classpath issues the EVERY Websphere Studio and WAS user will run into when compiling the simplest of applications. This book is a ... reference of Servlet and JSP snippets.
Rating: Summary: a review from the author Review: This book covers a broad range of topics from Applets to EJBs all in the context of the J2EE architecture using the IBM WebSphere Studio development tool. The many different J2EE APIs have entire books dedicated to them that go into great depth. This book is intended to give the reader a broad understanding of the development side of J2EE applications using many different samples. The samples in the book use step-by-step instructions with screen captures to show the reader how to build different applications in WebSphere Studio. The source code for the samples is in the book and also on the web site for the book. There are a few Java APIs that do not have any special tooling in WebSphere Studio, like the Java Mail API, so they are not covered in this book. The WebSphere Bible and Professional IBM WebSphere 5.0 Application Server are good companion books that cover server configuration and Enterprise Edition features. There is an anonymous reviewer that seems intent on bashing this book. No book is perfect, but this book does not deserve the bashing or one star ratings. We have many emails from people who enjoy the book, and we have personally answered reader's questions. I suggest that you judge the book for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Excellant turoial on WSAD Review: This book covers a lot of topics, so I did not finish all the chapters. I learned how to use WSAD to build applications for the web. The examples in the book were very helpful and they showed many different types of J2EE applications. You have to go to the web site for the book to get the completed labs. This book is great for understanding WSAD version 5.
Rating: Summary: Great coverage of WSAD Review: This book has many good examples of how to use WSAD and build J2EE applications. Some of the labs are a bit long, but the code in the book and the web site with the solutions helped.
Rating: Summary: A comprehensive ?introduction? to WASD Review: This book is a comprehensive "introduction" to WASD, considering the many facets of J2ee and the umpteen capabilities of WASD. This books covers the how to accomplish core J2EE (Web) technologies using WASD from HTLM pages, JSP, Servlets, JDBC to EJB. This book is not a how to program in J2EE, you will need one book per topic for that! However the author does give a good introduction to each core technology. The main purpose of the book is about how to use WASD. And is ten times better than the online tutorial or help that comes with WASD. The online help becomes helpful after you finish this book. The book does have code errors and Grammar problems. But, All in all is well presented, I am glad I found this book it got me going fully with WSAD in 10 days, putting in about 2 hours each night
Rating: Summary: Excellent tutorials Review: This book is an excellent overview of J2EE technology and provides the novice J2EE developer the tools to understand and immediately begin developing web apps with WSAD. It contains a number of WSAD tutorials that I found to be invaluable as I began learning J2EE and WSAD basics.
Rating: Summary: Save Your Money!!! Review: This book is very light in its coverage of Websphere Studio and Websphere.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not nitty gritty Review: This was a great book to use in getting started with WSAD. The step-by-step tutorials help get one through the often complex steps of creating applications in WSAD, and at the same time introduce good design principles. The negative reviewers seem to imply that you will have only one book on WebSphere on your bookshelf--which isn't realistic. This book won't be the only one you buy for WebSphere development, but it is a very good book to become familiar with the tool and build enough proficiency to make good use of more "reference oriented" texts.
