Summary: For those who want to be Professionals...
Review: "Building Web Services and .NET Applications" is for the people who want to build real-world apps on their own, not just copy a sample application. This book is for people who would rather have the fundamental knowledge that will allow them to make the right choices in designing and constructing their code.

Key strengths of the book include: .NET code samples, emphasis on design and debugging, valuable references of XML technologies, ADO.NET, and ASP.NET, as well as integration of web services with Java.

The authors' approach of teaching the fundamentals of XML, XSD, DOM, XSLT, SOAP, and .NET is what makes me recommend this book so highly. In doing this, the authors' have written a book that prepares you do go out into the real world and make informed decisions, not just cut and paste their techniques into your application.

If you need to build a system and want to take advantage of this new technology, and you want to understand how to properly implement .NET, this book is for you. In this book you get the fundamental knowledge, design principles, and code samples that you need to succeed with this new paradigm in programming.

Summary: Technically superb
Review: A technically superb book. This book is best suited for serious Enterprise application developers who are interested in developing .NET applications.

This book covers a wide range of topics about this technology, starting off in Part I with an overview of XML: XML Basics, XML Schemas, DOM, XSLT, SOAP, and Web Services. Part II discusses .NET Framework: Common Language Runtime, .NET Framework Classes, Integrating SQL Server 2000 with .NET, and ADO.NET. Part III goes into greater detail about developing .NET Services and Applications, it even discusses how to debug .NET applications.

Overall it is an a great well written book!

Summary: Excellent Technical Reference
Review: As a professional software developer, I have a need to continually develop and enhance my experience base. Reading and working through examples in technical books is one of the fastest methods for getting up to speed on emerging technologies. As a result, I am continually looking for technical books. Unlike many books in my collection, this book was a pleasant surprise. The book does an excellent job of covering the basics and provides plenty of code examples. The book was obviously written by experienced developers with an understanding of the shortcomings of most technical books. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get up to speed on .NET.

Summary: Good Overview Book
Review: Authors have done a good job of giving a good overview of XML, XSLT, SOAP and WebServices. Creating and understanding a schema is well done. SOAP and WebServices are clearly explained. This book could have been just on XML, XSLT, SOAP and WebServices.

If you know some XML and XML schema, little or no SOAP and WebService you can have this book to quickly get an overview.

Summary: Building Web Service and .NET Applications
Review: Building Web Services and .NET Applications is the most comprehensive book I've read on the subject of .NET. The authors have organized and presented the material very methodically with each chapter building on the material in the preceeding chapters. This book provides a solid foundation on XML and the reasons for using the .NET platform.

ADO, the Common Language Runtime, ASP.NET and .NET Windows forms are covered in great detail with good examples that you can build and learn from. The book wraps up with an excellent chapter on integration with Java. If you want to learn .NET quickly this is the book to use.

Summary: Original and Legit
Review: Dont you get sick of books that are basically help files and online documentation with some window dressing?? Well this book avoids that totally....granted it does have some reference type material in it, but only to get you up to speed on relevant technologies.

I have heard of these guys before ...and they are the real deal...they have the real world experience and this book shows it.
