Summary: Visual Basic 6 Manual Review
Review: Beginning Visual Basic 6, I find it very well laid out, it offers me valuable information pertaining to programming code, some areas regarding database programming is still a little tough for me to handle right now, but I'm sure reading Beginning Visual Basic 6 is bound to help. Since my software did not come with paper manuals I rely solely and heavily on this manual. Of all the manuals I reviewed in the bookstore, I chose Visual Basic 6 as I felt it was the best.

Summary: Excellent book with code explained in details
Review: This is the best book I have studied on Visual Basic; compared with "Using...". "24 hrs.." and other series. This book teaches us more than just using the mouse. It gives us more on codes and explains the reasons under the hood. "Try It Out" have well designed exercises to practise the concepts and "How It Works" give the explanation to enforce the topics. The solutions to "Why Not Try" provide additional explanations on the subject.

I am not a professional programmer but has been "playing around" with C, C++ and Visual Basic. I will recommend this book to anyone who is "serious about leaning Visual Basic". I don't think the book is suitable for a complete beginner to Visual Basic. You may have to start with other simpler book like "24 hours....".

My daughter (21) said Peter was dorky and should have combed his hair. I like the picture of the author. With the picture you remember the author's name and it is good to know who is talking to you (like over the telephone). The Red Army colour is attractive.

I have religiously completed up to Chapter 14 (Database Access) and moved on to Wrox's Beginning VB6 Database (John Connell combed his hair). I will go back to Chapter 15 on Objects after pursuing Database.

I like Wrox series so much that I have bought Beginning VB6 Objects (also by that dorky Peter) and the book is gathering dust on the shelf.

A very good book. Well done Peter and Wrox. 6 stars.

Summary: Okay ONLY for beginners
Review: If you already have done some programming, it'd be better to spend your money on a book with a little more serious approach. However for complete novices, who are new even to programming this book may be of good use. All in all this is good buy for those who don't have any experience in programming at all

Summary: Unorganized content but some good information
Review: Just learning VB, this book was recommended to me from someone who I believe is a total idiot. I should have trusted my instinct. There is good information in the book and can help you get into VB, but it is very unorganized! It's basically a program with ten thousand GOTOs!!! He talks about something then says, "That's covered 4 chapters later"! Or you will see some syntax and he will not address it for 3 chapters. Chapter 2, page 59, he shows a code window with 'Option Explicit' on the top. I kept wondering, what is that and why is that not in my code window? Well, he does not answer that question until Chapter 5!! I sure hope his programs are organized better than this book.

Summary: Much better than teach yourself in 21 days....
Review: This book takes you from no VB knowledge to a rather indepth level. This book is best for people who are accustomed to computers and have a general understanding for what computers do and what computer programming is. If not, the book might be a tad fast. I have and will reccommend this book!

Summary: Pretty good beginner's book
Review: After reading this book 2x, I found that the book was good overall but there were a few things that were frustrating. First the author used examples that were non realistic. For example in chptr 10 up to pg 310, he shows how to create a menu including the edit cut item. However, the only code he shows you to add to this is one that pops up a message box saying you have selected cut from the edit menu. I have never used any software that has given me this message when I've selected from the edit cut menu. I had to go to VB3 Superbible to find how to code for a user making a "drag" selection. Anyway, the author does provide some good explanations and examples especially with the case studies. So if you can take some irrelevant sample codes with some good case studies, then this is your book.

Summary: Well worth your time
Review: After a couple of months I finally finished this book. I have to admit that there were some places I felt lost (object variables, creating your own objects, creating your own controls). However, I feel like I've gotten a good grasp on the VB6 language through this book. I decided to write a simple application to help me out at work and ended up spending an entire week on it and using nearly everything (except database access) that I had learned in this book - pay special attention to error handling. I didn't read it that closely and when time came to create my own program, I had to bone up on error handling big time. I take points off for the subject of writing and reading the registry missing from the lessons of the book. It *is* covered, in one of the case studies, however, but I would think nearly every application would need to write to the registry to save application settings. All in all, there are probably not many better books for the VB beginner out there. For the next level, I've been finding 'Expert Guide to VB 6' from Sybex to narrow the gap between beginner and advanced.

Summary: Fantastic Beginners book.
Review: I really have to congratulate WROX. Every book I have purchased from them has been excellent. I strong recommend this book to beginners dealing with databases.

Peter Wright puts a great book together. Although I have read some of the other reviews I must disagree. When I bought this book on a friday night I could not put it down I just keep reading. I read this book cover to cover in one night. How easy it is to understand the points Mr. Wright is trying to get across. If Microsoft only had authors like this!!!

Summary: The index in this book is virtually worthless.
Review: A friend tells me that there is an easier way to set things up using the FORMAT function. I know little about this function and go to this text book to read up. Unfortunately, the FORMAT function is not in the index.

I want to look up ITEM DATA VALUES for assigning text into list/combo boxes which the computer sees a related number which is easier for the computer to digest; however, the topic is NOT in the index.

I go to the library and look through a variety of Visual Basic textbooks and all list above topics in index and explain topics precisely.

These are just two of my many problems using a very limited index. If you are going to use this text as a reference book, you are going to find yourself very frustrated. I know I am regretting purchasing this book.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Not worth the money. Buy Gary Cornell's instead and save!
Review: Too much blas and the treatment of topics is in general very shallow. For a better yet cheaper book, try Visual Basic 6 From the Ground Up from Osborne.
