Summary: Good buy
Review: Good book to learn on your own

Summary: This is the one that finally started me off in VB
Review: I read this book from cover to cover more than two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Before this book, I've read Sams' Teach Yourself VB 5 in 24 Hours. While that gave me a taste of VB, it didn't give me enough to write standalone programs or enough to allow me to solve problems with VB. Wrox is a favorite of mine ever since I got this Beginning book. I have come to understand and develop programs with VB because of this book. Lots of great examples. Though no CD comes with it, it's really a blessing because it forces the reader to enter in these small snippets of code. I've referred back to it for definition and code snippets. A great learning tool as well as a great reference for those little things that one forgets sometimes. So many people have borrowed it from me, it has finally been lost. I'll have to order a new one. *sigh*

Summary: Very bad approach
Review: Anyone can write a book which can explain the basics of VB environment. But it takes a great teacher to explain the more involved concepts like Object oriented approach. here is where Peter wright is lacking. He seem to introduce examples with components in them which are explained in the later chapters. The text lacks coherence and seem to jump from one topic to another. also the phase and flow of the topics is uneven. for example, he seems to introduce too much at once.
As a whole I found the book to be not very good.

Summary: Sample Code Works!
Review: One of the most important features a good computer book must have is for the sample code to actually work.

This is one of, suprisingly, very few computer books where the sample code and the step by step examples actually work.

This is an excellent book.

Summary: Filling in the Gaps
Review: As a self taught programmer, this book was able to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle. I recommend this book for anyone who is a self starter. The british flavor of the writer is evident with the text. A must have for anyone who is willing to write the example code.

Summary: Motivating the reader
Review: I am not new to programming - but totally new to Visual Basic. Whilst Peter's book might look daunting (almost 900 pages), you soon feel comfortable with its content.

I started reading the book chapter - by chapter. As my confidence and understanding grew, I used it more as a reference, jumping all over the place.

I think a background in programming certainly helps - but not a prerequisite. Peter uses 'every-day' language and his choice of humour makes digesting the very powerful programming language easier.

My cover is now creased, the CD-ROM has been filed somewhere, cat prints and tea-stains can be found within the pages. Need i say more?

Summary: It just flows.
Review: I haven't seen programming since high school with BASIC. This book holds your hand through what would seem intimidating topics for the novice. The first chapter goes over the Windows interface: not terribly exciting. But you'll notice the rest of the book's presentation has a smooth and logical progression. The writing is very clear and not terribly boring. I thought it was an excellent investment.

Summary: Top 10 VB6 Books
Review: This book is designed to teach you how to write useful programs in Visual Basic 6 as quickly and easily as possible. You will be amazed at how easy it is and how much you can do. This book starts you off with a solid foundation of the VB6 environment then moves you to a full understanding of writing Visual Basic code. Then it takes you to mastering databases and graphics and leads you into a good understanding of ActiveX controls. With this book you will be developing your own powerful programs in a months time.

Summary: Not the brightest bulb on the X-Mas Tree...
Review: I am a new VB programmer, and I took a course at a local institute of technology school on VB. We were given this book for some material to learn at home.

The biggest part of VB is the coding, or programming. This book does not go into very much depth, and even the very basics of coding (like variables) are not compleatly covered. What really annoyed me about this book is that the examples & 'try it out' parts (written by another author) did not follow Peter Wright's proper coding rules (like naming conventions). Also, the 'recomended' book after this one is a VB Objects book. Now, this book would be a fine recomendation, IF Beggining VB6 would have gone into a lot more depth on coding.

The Good: A good introduction to Visual Basic's environment and lingo. Great for non-programmers that havn't looked at the VB program.

The Bad: Bad consistancy with amount of deatail, some places have LOADS of info and some places have basically nothing. Examples could have been done much much better and not enough info on the actual language of VB.

The Bottom line: Look at this book first VB grasshoppers, then go else-where for depth on the Language (VB & VBA in a Nutshell: the Languages comes to mind).

Summary: I liked it. A great introduction to Visual Basic!
Review: This book gives you all the basics about Visual Basic. It has a lot of information but it is only the beginning. There are many areas of visual basic you can delve into and Wrox has many books you can go to after finishing this one. It was a fun book to read and I recommend going through the examples and case studies. Visual Basic is a great language that is actually fun to program in.
