Summary: This book has far too little material in it to cost so much
Review: For the price of the book I felt that it should contain much more detailed informantion on computer science.

Summary: Not to good
Review: I am actually getting a major in Computer Science and this book was my very first. I think it is a brutal introduction because there is not that much information in the book to help you solve the problems that I think are way too complicated for first timers. I had to get tutoring for the entire semester in order to pass the class and I had to use more than one other book not by the same author to help me understand better what I was doing.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very appropriate for first year CS/CIS majors....
Review: I found the information presented in this book very appropriate and challenging for a first year university textbook....

However, as with all university textbooks, it's priced too high.....

Summary: This book is a bomb.....
Review: I was very disappointed in this book. The guy puts his URL in the book and I get a 404 error. Then I send him an e-mail and he never acknowledges it. The laboratories are busy work. They take over an hour each and I did not learn anything from them. They were just to keep you busy. They were not clearly explained. I have worked in IT for 5 years and I was scratching my head most of the time. The topics were scratching the surface and very high level with no substance. At the end of the chapter, I would outline it and it was eight or nine pages explaining something which would have taken me half the page to explain and then it did not explain it clearly. He touched on unimportant concepts and ignored really important and interesting stuff. I pan this book. Terrible. Don't buy it.

Summary: Listen not to idiots .. This book is as good as it gets !
Review: What did you think my darling young ones ? That computer science is for the faint of heart..? That if you can set up a spreadsheet you can do Computer Science ?
OF COURSE it is a brutal introduction ! Computer Science is a complex and demanding discipline and this book does a miracle of explanation.
So what if the authors URL is non-functioning ?

Summary: As an initial overview of CS, this book is a winner!!
Review: With a Master's Degree in Computer Science and over 7 years on the job experience, I can say this book is the best introductory book I have ever read. It refuses to allow one to dive too fast into "programming" and instead encourages a strong foundation of basic knowledge that underlies the field of Computer Science before one embarks into any individual programming language approach. The approach and content is appropriate, logical and laudable, and unfortunately rare among most text books in this area.
