Rating: Summary: Great beginner introduction to UML Review: UML has a harsh learning curve due to a paradox: it is full of little details, which are hard to understand without seeing the big picture, and vice versa. Compound that with all the fancy language found in most UML books and you're in for a whole lot of frustration. This book is good for taking your first steps in UML. You get a view of the big picture as well as the details in a short enough time so that it all can gel conceptually. After reading "Teach Yourself UML in 24 Hours" you won't be ready yet to put UML on your resume - but it will save you at least that much time reading the more advanced UML books.
Rating: Summary: Look No Further... This is the Book Review: I purchased this book back in March along with a copy of 'Applying UML and Patterns'. Both books are quite good, but this one is easy to read, has 24 nicely designed one-hour exercises, and is perfect if you want some structure in your learning. I'm glad I found it! If you want to learn UML, it's hard to imagine a better way to do it.
Rating: Summary: UML for the Rest of Us Review: That is, the rest of us who didn't attend M.I.T. By breaking the subject up into short, focued chapters with simple examples, the author leads the reader into increasing complexity without overwhelming him or her. The book not only explains "the UML" as a notation system, but shows how it is used in practice. Highly recommended to anyone who needs to get up to speed quickly on this subject.
Rating: Summary: Excellent real world example Review: The book starts with an intro to UML which is a little dry but in the part two it makes up for it with a really nice real world example. I highly suggest this book to people who are looking to get started with UML, however I suggest that you read through the first part quickly (before you get too bored) and then read the part two and make refrences to part one.
Rating: Summary: This book should have more pratical examples Review: This book is good as an introductory book, but it needs more pratical examples and a case study using a good tool like Rational Rose. It needs also an explanation about how to aply UML to the languages like VB and Java. I know there's a lot to talk in this field but a short case study associated with those languages would be valuable.

Rating: Summary: Clear presentation. Could be shorter: "UML in 16 Hours" Review: I found this book to be a clear presentation of UML. Of the 24 "hour long" chapters, the first 16 were useful. The remaining chapters were, from my point of view, added to make the book reach the page quota the publisher had because people don't like to buy short books. The first 16 chapters clearly present the material in a way that most programmers and non-programmers should be able to understand. If you are a professional developer and like a very rigorous and logically laid out presentation of a language, you will probably find this book able to explain what UML is but you won't feel like you have a very deep grasp of the material. This was the case for me. At the end of the day, I gave the book 4 starts for its clarity. I will now probably look for a language guide or soemthing along those lines. On occasion, the author gave endorsements for Microsoft products. I personally did not like this.
Rating: Summary: Nice and Concise Review: I have several books on UML that dump tons of information and hype with very little substance. This book is all substance, providing nice chapters on each of the tools in the UML toolbox. Although I am still not convinced on the usefulness of UML, this book came the closest to selling me on the ideas.
Rating: Summary: UML for everyone Review: You can't expect to be an expert by just reading a book without any "real world" experience. But that's not the purpose of this book. It's a very good book to get the basic understanding of UML. The Case Study used in this book (it's about building the restaurant of the future) is very useful, as it helps the reader to see how to apply UML in the "real world" development effort. Other UML books that I read so far didn't give any case study that can help a beginner in UML to think in UML's way.
Rating: Summary: Teach Yourself UML Review: As a UML novice, I needed a clear and concise overview of what UML is all about. That is exactly what I got. The author takes a different tact by starting with the mechanics of the UML diagrams first, then walks you through the theory. This gets you ready for the best part, a multi-chapter case study that helps you get the big picture of a complex topic. After a read through, you can quickly scan italicized sections for a refresher. The included CD has lots of useful stuff too. The book is well written and reads easily. I recommend it highly and without reservation.
