Summary: At least a hardware/software generation behind
Review: PC hardware and software changes rapidly, and this book desperately needs updating. No discussions of Pentium 4 class systems and related current memory and operating system updates. Save your $. If you are ready to build, cuy the OReilly "PC Hardware in a Nutshell" book instead.

Summary: Another great book in this series.
Review: So far no Dummies book has let me down and this book is no exception. I found it easy to read and it included everything from how to buy to how to install each part. It included DVD and PII CPU chips and I found the chapter on video very helpful when I bought my AGP card. This book is a great all--around computer assembly and upgrade manual.

Summary: poor book
Review: the author's writing style is horrible. all the useful information in this book could be trimmed to about 10 pages. don't expect to learn a lot! if you know nothing about computer hardware you could extract a little information from this book but you'll spend most of your time reading his stupid comments and jokes. this book really is meant "for dummies".

Summary: A good book I would recomend this for beginners
Review: The book goes in to deep detail about building pcs. However it is a little outdated expically when it talks about installing operating systems. but If you have no clue about computers and want to learn this is the best book to read.

Summary: Great for advance beginners like myself.
Review: The only thing technical I know so far is how to add more memory(which was like first time surgery), so its great if you want to push through that barrier.

Summary: Updated with the latest technology!
Review: The second edition of my book has been expanded with information about the latest hardware, including Pentium II and III processors, AGP video, CD-RW, 3D audio and much more!

Building a PC for Dummies explains what you need to know to assemble your own multimedia PC, including how to use "scavenged" parts to cut the cost of your computer even more! Each chapter covers a specific part of your PC completely, so you can make the right choice when shopping for new hardware. I also provide a general set of step-by-step instructions that will familiarize you with the installation process for each part.

Unlike other books of this type, Building a PC for Dummies doesn't stop after you've built a standard multimedia PC - instead, additional chapters address advanced hardware like SCSI, peer-to-peer networking and ISDN, so you can create the ultimate power user PC.

All of this information is provided in the popular Dummies style, making the book a great reference for later projects as well!

Thanks -- and good luck on your next PC project!

Summary: Not worth it...
Review: This book is not worth it. Really outdated. I am 13 and build a lot of computers, but wanted more info. I would suggest this if this was my first computer that I built, but since I had computer experience, I would not suggest it. Good for begineers, bad for experts.

Summary: A very helpful book
Review: This book provided me with all the information I needed to finish buying a hard drive and sound card for my PC. Installation went without a hitch. If you want to learn more about the computer and build one like a Gateway or Dell, everything you need is described. I would reccommend this book to anyone.

Summary: A good introduction
Review: This book serves as a good introduction to the basic parts and relations of most pc's. The book was ordered well and explains some of today's computer terminology. The glossary needs to be expanded.

Summary: When they say "For Dummies", they ain't kiddin'
Review: This book was written for kindergarteners. Literally. It was absolutely awful, a slap in the face that the author talked to you, the reader, like you were a total moron. I kind of got the feeling the author was just a dead-beat with little computer knowledge. There were a few interesting tips, but painfully sifted out of almost 400 pages of crap. Maybe all the "...For Dummies" books are written like this, I don't know. I learned almost nothing about computers, and I'm not a whiz by any standards. If you have ever used a computer before, this book is probably too basic for you. A bad purchase, let alone for over $20.
