Summary: great for beginners wanting to learn Java
Review: I just started learning Java and this has been the best resource yet! It goes into great detail on foundation topics. It also explains in English what the code is doing. With these explainations, you are really able to grasp the concepts.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Poorly written book
Review: 1.The whole book presents information in a linear, bore-you-to-death, window-help-file style. No section summarys, no warning and tips, no JAVA programming insights.

2. The exception handling chapter is confusing, the input-output chapters are unreadable. Window GUI programing (which by its nature should be interesting) in this book can make you start wondering why you want to learn JAVA.

3. The book's size can be cut down 30% if it's not as WORDY as it is now.

4. After reading so many "wonderful" reviews at Amazon, I bought this book last year. But after a whole painful month, I gave up and switched to other books.

Summary: Great Book if you want to learn Java
Review: I used this book as a text for a College Java Course. I found the book very helpful and a great resourse. The code examples work! The full code is available as a download from the wrox site. As a mainframe programmer, this book was just what I needed to get a good working understanding of Java. The treatment of the Java 2 platform is excellent. The author presents topics in a concise, step by step way making it easily understood. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a programming background and wants to get a good understanding of Java.

Summary: U can learn JAVA!
Review: 1. Easy to read and understand this book if you have little programming experience and know how to work computer and download free JAVA software and work with it. 2. It doesn't have answer to the questions. 3. No CD with the book. 4. Chapters are nicely organized. 5. If you practice the programs, I bet you will learn JAVA. 6. Best book on JAVA 2, if compared with other books. 7. Beginning JAVA 2 doesn't mean that it is for beginners who wants to program, it says on top of the book that it is from a PROGRAMMER TO PROGRAMMER.

Summary: Good book if you are serious about Java
Review: This is a very good book for learning java. I have not seen any other books which explains basic things as well details. If somebody wants to learn Java, he or she must read ALL the sentences contained in this book. Each and every sentence are valuable (although the author repeats some important sentences several times).

Each books are different and each authors present something which are not covered by other. This book alone is not sufficient to master Java. But it is a very good for beginners.

Summary: It saves my life! Thanks
Review: I'm a yr 1 student at the Univ of Auckland. With the serious lack of funding/computer, absolutely lousy lecturers and the use of an outdated java textbook, I definitely would not have passed the CS course without the help of this book.

I'm now packing my luggage and heading to the US/UK in search for a better education and a better life.(no more anti-science, Green/Labour nonsense) And any idea what book I'll bring along with me?

Thanks for all the good reviews posted for this book here. Thank you to all of you! Have this book on your bookshelf ready if you plan to take your 1st Java course. Half way through the course, you'll find this book indispensable.

Summary: beginner-sminner ... it's just a great book
Review: This book does not seem to be created for the computer novice. You have to have a good level of computer knowledge to understand this book. If you fit that criteria this book will be for you. Be warned that you get into the deep details of all the basics. You will get the chance to really understand how things work and you have to pay attention. Ivor has really done a good job with this book and I recommend it to most people. This is not a book that will hold your hand and rub it as you read. My Java skills are extremely solid in the basics thanks to this book and I how there is a non-beginners book that will come out soon. I plan to go through the entire line of Horton books and allow him to teach me how to utilize my programming skills to the fullest. Thanks, Mr. Horto!

Summary: Hard to read (too much details for a beginner book)
Review: I have been programming in Fortran, C, VB for 15 years. This book, in my opinion, has the following problems: 1.The huge amount of details could be organized in a better way.The author has put too much details into it right from the beginning. The readers are buried in it without seeing the big picture. It could happen that you fight through 1/3 of the book (that's already 400 pages with very small font size) but still don't know how to start to write a real Java program. 2. it would be better that the writing be in a more compact fashion. The author has spent lots of space (and did a good job ) in teaching good, general programming techniques, but I prefer getting to Java's real meat more quickly and directly. . I would love to give a 3 star, but since everyone else (almost) is applauding it, allow me to pull it down a little bit :-)

Summary: Great Beginning to Learning Java 2
Review: Ivor Horton has done what few other authors are willing to take the time to do: Write a book with COMPLETE examples and THOROUGH analysis. Of course this text can not cover everything, it is a book for beginners. However, once you complete it, you will have a solid foundation upon which to build.

Summary: Good...But Not ideal for Macintosh
Review: This is Dr. Ahmad Issawi from Lebanese University : This book is clear, cover all the Scientific Material of Java language, too abstractive sometimes -like Chapter1- (it does NOT contain CD). It seems that "Ivor Horton" had never heard of something called Macintosh... his book doesn't give any information about special features for Java on Mac. In one word : I don't think there is a book more extensive and wide than this (especially for beginners),... but if you use MacOS : I'm sure that it won't be sufficient to learn, apply, and enjoy Java on your Mac.
